Hancock Motor Cycle Crash
(Hancock) – A Franklin man sustained serious injuries when a car pulled in front of the motorcycle he was driving on Route 1 in Hancock. State Police Spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 that 52-year old Wesley Corbin was unable to avoid the car as 76 year old Florence French pulled onto Route 1 at the Hancock Heights Trailer Park Saturday morning. The Life Flight helicopter flew Corbin to Eastern Maine Medical Center while his wife, Karen received treatment at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital for minor injuries.
Missing Employee
(Bangor) – It may be some sort of organized scam that led an employee of a Bangor fast food restaurant to head to make a bank deposit and never to return to work. Police found the young woman who worked at the Broadway McDonalds in the parking lot at the Brewer Wal-Mart Sunday morning. Her manager had reported her missing shortly after 8-o’clock yesterday morning. Neighboring police departments kept an eye open for the missing car and spotted it at Wal-Mart. Police say the young woman is safe and the investigation is continuing.
Missing Person
(Bangor) – Searchers returned to the Kenduskeag Stream in Bangor this morning after suspending a search for a man who fell into the stream yesterday. The Police Department reports to Star 97.7 that they got a report of a man falling into the stream around 5:30 last evening. Game wardens searched the stream until darkness forced them to give up. Authorities have not yet released a name but said the man is believed to be in his 40s. They say the man slipped on a railing on a platform overlooking the stream near the intersection of Valley and Bruce Roads.
Hancock Street Closure
(Ellsworth) – Folks living on Hancock Street in Ellsworth will want to prepare for Wednesday. City officials tell Star 97.7 that the downtown street will close on Wednesday as grinders chew up the top layer of pavement in preparation for paving. The street will reopen later in the day once the milling operations are complete.
Castine Manager Named
(Castine) – There will be a new town manager in Castine in a couple of weeks. The Castine Patriot reports Selectmen hired Sean Blodgett of Colorado Springs, Colorado to take the top government post. Blodgett is retired from the military and had been looking to move to Maine. He will start on June 10th, giving a 3-week overlap with current manager Jimmy Goodson who is retiring.
Thomaston Manager Retiring
(Thomaston) – The mid-coast town of Thomaston is losing its town manager who has held the post for 26-years. Valmore Blastow announced last week that his last day on the job will be June 5th. Blastow took the position in the spring of 1993. Village Soup dot-com reports Blastow did not leave as he wished, calling the workplace environment toxic and hostile, and that he’s not been able to carry out the duties of the office.
Memorial Day Events
(Local) Many area communities have planned Memorial Day services. The parade in Ellsworth will line up at 9:30 and begin at 10AM, stopping briefly on the Main Street Bridge and ending at City Hall. Blue Hill’s parade begins at 10 this morning near the American Legion Hall, proceeding down Main Street and pausing on the bridge for a brief ceremony. Bar Harbor’s Memorial Day Remembrance Service is at 10, at the town pier at West Street and Newport Drive. In Belfast the annual parade steps off at 11 from the Reny’s parking lot and marches down Main Street to the waterfront. And the Bucksport parade begins at 4 this afternoon at the American Legion Hall and will conclude with a wreath-laying service at the Veterans Memorials on the waterfront.
(Lamoine) The town of Lamoine’s Memorial Day service is at the town hall where Korean War veteran Linwood Brann will lay the wreath on the Lamoine War Memorial. Selectman Gary McFarland tells Star 97-7 that today’s guest speaker is an accomplished 12-year-old girl scout. The Lamoine Memorial Day service beings this morning at 10.
Mexican Restaurant
(Ellsworth) The building that housed the former Bangkok Restaurant on Downeast Highway in Ellsworth for nearly 2 decades is about to become a Mexican restaurant. The Ellsworth American reports Mi Sombrero Mexican Restaurant will serve tacos, burritos and other customary Mexican cuisine. Owner Zunilda Escalante from Honduras has lived in the US since 2011. She’s hired a Puerto Rican chef who worked at a Mexican restaurant in Philadelphia for years. The new restaurant is set to open in a couple weeks.
Police Academy Graduation
(Vassalboro) Maine’s 63 newest police officers graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro on Friday. The officers spent 18 weeks in study and training on topics like crime scene processing, first aid, traffic and criminal law, domestic violence and sexual assault. Graduates coming to the area include Nathan Pike with Baileyville PD, Elias Burne with Bar Harbor Police, Colby Leavitt at Belfast PD, Joshua Staples with the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, and Jonathan Curran at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Bridge Painting
(Hancock/Wshngtn) The Maine Department of Transportation will paint local bridges soon. Work begins June 3rd on the Trenton bridge on Route 3 crossing over the Mt. Desert Narrows between Trenton and Bar Harbor. The work will result in traffic lanes shifts in June and July. The Washington County bridge carries Route 169 over the Baskahegan Stream near Danforth. That work will require a single lane closure with alternating one-way traffic during the day. Work on both bridges is scheduled for completion by November 15th.
Safe Boating
(Local) The Coast Guard reminds boaters to be safe on the water this Memorial Day weekend. Officials encourage everyone on-board a vessel to wear a life jacket. It’s recommended you file a float plan – tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return. Also, it’s illegal to operate a boat while intoxicated. Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents.
FFCC Volunteers
(Ellsworth) Families First Community Center is working to finish renovations on a transitional home by early summer. Volunteers are needed to make that happen. Upcoming work includes putting in insulation, installing a handrail, building a kitchen island and a pantry, and some interior painting. Community members can volunteer just a few hours or work a whole day. The home is located on North Street in Ellsworth. Contact Families First Community Center if you’d like to pitch in.
