Fire Danger
(Old Town) – Maine’s forest fire danger took a leap from the lowest setting just two days ago to the next to highest danger yesterday. The Maine Forest Service classified most of Maine as in high fire danger Monday as dry weather and high winds made conditions just right for fast spreading fires. One fire in Surry got away from landowners quickly, prompting response from several area departments. They got it out before it caused much damage. Most area fire departments opted not to issue burning permits yesterday.
Woman Missing
(Millinocket) – The search is on in Northern Maine for two women who vanished Sunday evening. WABI-TV reports the last time anyone saw Aprylle Ashley-Pepper and Tammy Michaud was at a pool tournament at a Millinocket bar. The pair said they were going for a ride along the Golden Road, but no one has seen them since. They were believed to be driving a gray Kia Sportage.
Hermon Man Missing
(Hermon) – It’s been a little over two weeks since anyone has seen a 25-year old Hermon man. Ryan Messer was last seen with an olive colored backpack and riding a 10-speed mountain bike in Hermon. The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department has posted his picture on their Facebook page and asks that anyone who might have seen Messer to contact them.
Naked Man
(Orland) – Motorists in Orland got quite the sight during one of the rare sunny days of April last week. An Orland man celebrated the somewhat warmer weather by standing beside the roadside in his all-together. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department got a call – a deputy asked the man why he opted not to wear anything – the response – he just wanted to enjoy the nice weather. The deputy issued him a warning about the indecent exposure laws.
Wiscasset Man Found-Dead
(Wiscasset) The body of a missing Wiscasset man was found Saturday when his car was pulled from the Back River. The Morning Sentinel reports 36-year-old Casey Main was reported missing last Thursday when he failed to return home from work. Police say Main had frequent medical issues but did not elaborate on what they were. His car was found in the river near a boat launch off Old Ferry Road. The state medical examiner is trying to determine Main’s cause of death.
Rt 9 Roadwork
(Washington Cty) Preservation work on Route 9 in Washington County has resumed. The Maine Department of Transportation picked up this week where they left off before winter hit. The construction extends for nearly 18 miles of Route 9. Motorists should expect lane closures Monday through Saturday during daylight hours from now until May 25th when the Maine DOT anticipates the roadwork will be complete.
Road Flooding
(Milford) Road flooding in Milford has caused headaches for local drivers. WABI-TV reports emergency responders have rescued 2 drivers who got stuck on Greenfield Road in less than a week. The Maine DOT shut down the road in mid-April because of high water. Even with large barricades warning drivers of the closure, a motorist drove through Monday morning and became stranded. Drivers have been re-routed to Cardville Road instead.

City Computer Ransom
(Augusta) – When a computer virus brought the city of Augusta to a virtual standstill, hackers demanded ransom in excess of $100-thousand dollars. The Kennebec Journal reports the city manager refused to pay. City tech experts resorted to pulling all the plugs out of the city center computers to stop the virus from spreading until they could come up with a fix. That froze up the city’s financial systems, vehicle registration, assessing records and general assistance files.
Meadowbrook Forest
(Ellsworth/Surry) – A huge chunk of land in Surry and Ellsworth will become a public forest. Blue Hill Heritage Trust says it has purchased more than 2-thousand acres of land called Meadowbrook Forest. A grant helped with the purchase.
