Lobster 207 CEO Fired
(Lamoine) – A wholesale lobster co-op run by a union has fired its chief executive officer and a bank that holds a mortgage on the property is calling for a forensic audit. The Ellsworth American reports Lobster 207 LLC terminated Warren Pettegrow. He tells the paper the lobster union has leveled various untrue allegations. Pettegrow’s family sold their lobster pound and fleet of delivery trucks in Lamoine to Lobster 207 in 2013. Union members will meet in Ellsworth next month to discuss the situation.
Ellsworth Library
(Ellsworth) – The public library in Ellsworth is considering a plan to charge out of town users for library cards, but only those who live in communities that don’t provide financial support to the library. The Ellsworth American reports the library is considering a change to a per-capita fee request for all outside communities based on population instead of the number of card holders. The library does not charge anyone individual to use the library, but does ask other towns for $27-dollars per card holder for support. The city brings in about $40-thousand dollars a year from that support.
Pharmacy Robbery plea
(Bangor) – Investigators used DNA evidence to solve an 11-year old pharmacy robbery in Central Maine. The US Attorney’s office reports to Star 97.7 that 32-year old Michael Algiere entered a guilty plea in Bangor federal court this week. He admitted to holding up the Oakland Pharmacy in 2007. When he’s sentenced later, Algiere faces up to 20-years in prison and a quarter million dollar fine.
Bathroom Video
(Ellsworth) – A 25-year old from Cranberry Isles will spend 10-days in jail for making a video recording of an elderly woman using the bathroom at a now closed assisted living facility. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Jessica Bunker worked as a CNA at the facility and shared the video with a friend who reported the incident. Judge Bruce Mallonee found Bunker guilty of a misdemeanor crime of violating privacy.
Bangor Fire
(Bangor) – A smoke detector gets credit for alerting a Bangor woman to a fire in her mobile home early this morning. WABI-TV reports firefighters responded to Airedale Place at about 3-o’clock this morning and the woman living in the trailer was already outside. She’s not hurt, the trailer may be salvageable. There’s no word on the cause.
Card Brook Cleanup
(Ellsworth) The City of Ellsworth and Frenchman Bay Conservancy will collaborate again for this Saturday’s Card Brook Cleanup. Assistant City Planner Steve Fuller tells Star 97-7 the annual event draws volunteers to remove trash from a vital stream in Ellsworth that collects a lot of pollution. Volunteers will meet on the right side of the Ellsworth Hannaford parking lot at 9:30 Saturday morning to receive their instructions.
Fishermen Arraigned
(Hancock Cty) Two lobster fishermen have lost their licenses for 3 years for allegedly vandalizing another fisherman’s equipment. The Maine Marine Patrol launched an investigation after William Nichols of Stockton Springs lost 70 traps last year because someone cut them. 56-year-old Walter Foster of Castine and 22-year-old Nicholas Wood of Penobscot face multiple charges. Two of Wood’s crew members, Samuel Stearns of Penobscot and Nicholas Jennings of Castine, were also arraigned in Hancock County District Court.
Bar Harbor Job Fair
(Bar Harbor) As many as 2-dozen employers looking to fill seasonal and year-round positions in Bar Harbor will be on hand at the local Chamber’s annual Job Fair. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce aims to match workers with employers ahead of the town’s busy season. Job seekers should bring copies of their resume or work history and a photo ID to help with the application process. The job fair is this Saturday from 11 AM to 4 PM at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building on Cottage Street.
