Alleged Killer Jailed
(Ellsworth) – No bail for a young Bucksport woman accused of killing a 2-year old in 2017. The Bangor Daily News reports a judge ordered 21-year old Savannah Smith held without bail while she awaits a murder trial for the death of Kloe Hawksley. Smith was dating the toddler’s father and was the last person seen with the baby before a 9-1-1 call to report the child was unresponsive. An autopsy revealed that the toddler died from a blow to her abdomen that separated her stomach from her small intestine. There were other bruises on the child’s body.
Eastport Lawsuit
(Eastport) – A judge has ruled in favor of the City of Eastport in a lawsuit brought by a boat building company that leased space in a city owned mill. The Bangor Daily News reports Millennium Marine of New Brunswick sued the city after a fire in July of 2014 damaged the space they were leasing and destroyed a boat under construction. The city said says Millennium owed them tens of thousands of dollars in back rent and sought to evict the company. Millennium left the mill in 2017.
Chamber Online Voting
(Ellsworth) Online voting is underway for the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce annual business awards, allowing the public to vote in 3 categories. Executive director Gretchen Wilson explains nominees in the New Business of the Year category have been around 1 to 5 years and have made an impact in the community during that time. The 2 other awards are Customer Service and Revitalization. Online voting ends May 3rd.
Sullivan Cleanup
(Sullivan) Despite the weather on Saturday about 50 volunteers collected trash along Route 1 in Sullivan. A 6-mile stretch known as the Schoodic Scenic Byway was picked clean while several volunteers also tidied up more than a mile of the Tunk Lake Road. More than 100 bags of garbage were hauled away by the Maine DOT. Town manager Rob Eaton tells Star 97-7 the volunteers were treated to a cookout afterward, and the town is already planning next year’s Earth Day event.
Coca Cola Load
(Kennebunk) A shipment of Coca Cola headed to Bangor didn’t reach its destination because the tractor trailer truck hauling it caught fire. Maine state police report the truck driver noticed the fire around 1AM Monday and pulled over on the Maine Turnpike in Kennebunk. All 3 northbound lanes were shutdown while firefighters extinguished the blaze. The load of soda was destroyed but the driver from Virginia was uninjured.
Franky’s Law Public Hearing
(Augusta) The brutal murder of a family dog in Winter Harbor last summer has motivated animal lovers to seek harsher punishments for people convicted of animal cruelty. A public hearing for Franky’s Law is scheduled for May 1st in Augusta. Representative Donna Bailey has sponsored the bill, which would provide court-appointed advocates in animal cruelty cases, at no cost. Franky, a Pug mix, was tortured, killed, wrapped in garbage bags, and dumped into Frenchman Bay last August. The two men charged in connection with that crime are held at the Hancock County Jail.
Throckmorton Retiring
(Bangor) A local sports reporter who’s been gracing the airwaves for nearly 40 years is set to retire. WABI-TV sportscaster Tim Throckmorton began working at the TV station in 1980 shortly after graduating from the University of Maine. Throckmorton has covered thousands of games from local high school and college sports to Super Bowls. His last day on WABI-TV is scheduled for May 3rd.
Train-Pedestrian Death
(Biddeford) A pedestrian who was hit by a passenger train in Biddeford has died. Police say a southbound Amtrak train struck a 42-year-old man who was walking on the tracks late Sunday afternoon. Authorities identify him as 42-year-old Dennis MacGillivray of Biddeford. The train continued to Boston several hours later. The incident remains under investigation.

- Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi is out 4-to-6 weeks and will undergo surgery to remove items from his pitching elbow.
- The Celtics will take on the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2nd round of the NBA playoffs. The two teams met in the first round last year with Boston winning easily.
