Attempted Murder
(Twp 8) – A day and night of drinking may have led to a shooting that left a man wounded in Hancock County and his son under arrest. It happened at a camp in Township 8. State Police say 23-year old Christopher Laliberte of Richmond allegedly shot his father David during an early morning argument on Sunday. The Bangor Daily News reports Laliberte’s brother Branden told investigators about how the events unfolded. Christopher Laliberte is charged with attempted murder.
Counterfeit
(Bangor) – A 36-year old woman faces charges after she allegedly tried to pass two counterfeit bills at a Bangor convenience store. WVII-TV reports police arrested Tiffany Voisine yesterday. She’s out on unsecured bail and has a court date in June. Bangor police issued a warning about counterfeit money this week after fake 50s and 100-dollar bills showed up at businesses.
Protest Planned
(Ellsworth) A crowd of protesters plans to gather at SK Whiting Park in Ellsworth today at Noon. Hancock County Libertarian chair Allen Esposito tells Star 97-7 the political party hopes to get peoples’ attention. The state decertified the Libertarian party after last November’s election because not enough members voted. Esposito says the Libertarians in Hancock County and all over Maine think folks should be able to keep their hard-earned money, and problems in Maine should be solved through communities coming together.
Planned Outage
(Bar Harbor) Some Emera Maine customers in Bar Harbor will be without power for a few hours today. Emera crews are performing maintenance on the electrical system beginning at 8 this morning. Affected streets include the north side of Derby Lane, Main Street between Derby Lane and Albert Meadow, Albert Meadow, and part of Main Street north of Albert Meadow. The work should take about 4 hours to complete.
Fatal Fires
(Sabattus) Fire officials say two fatal fires in Maine in recent days were accidental. The blaze April 12th in Sabattus killed 63-year-old Darlene Shores. The State Fire Marshal’s Office says the fire originated near a wood stove, likely when Shores was trying to light a fire. The home had no electricity or running water. The other fire killed 75-year-old Richard Duley of Anson on April 14th. The fire marshal’s office says the fire started in the home’s basement and investigators found that an electrical conductor failed, causing the fire.
Alleged Infant Killer Trial
(Millinocket) A trial has begun for the man accused of killing a 6-month-old boy in Millinocket four years ago. 36-year-old Jessee Mackin is charged with manslaughter for the death of Larry Lord, Jr. Mackin was dating the boy’s mother at the time. WABI-TV reports police say the baby was unresponsive when his mother brought him to the hospital where the infant later died.
Naloxone in Schools
(Augusta) The governor is developing a program that would stock all Maine high schools and middle schools with the overdose antidote drug, naloxone. The Portland Press Herald reports the administration also wants to improve and expand prevention education to younger grades. Some lawmakers and educators say the program would end up making illegal drug use normal and impose more responsibilities onto school staff.
Blueberry Industry
(Augusta) Maine lawmakers might try to pump some life into the state’s troubled wild blueberry industry by overhauling the makeup of the commission that promotes the state’s most important fruit crop. Maine is America’s producer of wild blueberries. These are smaller than the more ubiquitous cultivated blueberries and are used in lots of frozen and processed products.
Healthcare Fraud-Embezzlement
(Portland) – A Rockland man will spend 4-months in prison and 3-years on supervised release after pleading guilty to health care fraud and embezzlement. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97.7 that 42-year old Michael Morrison will spend 4-months in home confinement. Morrison ran the swim and tan club at Trade Winds Health and also operated a physical therapy practice. He admitted to submitting $175-thousand dollars in false claims to various insurance companies. He also stole $31-thousand dollars from the Health club by using a company credit card to buy personal items from Amazon.com.
