Shooting Lawsuit
(Machias) – Two people wounded by a Marine Patrol Officer in December 2017 are suing the officer, the County Sheriff and others. The Bangor Daily News reports 35-year old Jason Jackson and 34-year old Tiffany Smith filed the suit this week. Jackson, who lost part of an arm in the shooting, was identified by an East Machias woman as the man who demanded money during a home invasion earlier in the day. He had a gun nearby when the Marine Patrol officer confronted him at his home. Smith says Jackson never made any move to get the gun or made any other threat against Jackson.
Fuel Pump Costs
(Ellsworth) – A plan to install new boat fuel tanks at the Ellsworth Harbor has become quite costly. The Bangor Daily News report the project was initially approved at $150-thousand dollars but has increased to $$336-thousand. City Manager David Cole said construction inflation is behind the increase. He said it’s difficult trying to find a contractor to even bid on the project.
Jonesport Sex Indictment
(Machias) – A Grand jury in Washington County has indicted a Jonesport man on gross sexual assault charges. WABI-TV reports the jurors found enough evidence to take Andrew Bertrand to trial. Bertrand is out of jail on bail, but is forbidden to be around any girls younger than 18.
(Machias) – Grand jurors in Washington County say there is enough evidence to proceed to trail against a Jonesport man. Andrew Bertrand is charged with gross sexual assault. He’s out of jail on bail, but forbidden to have any contact with girls less than 18-years old.
Waldo County WEA Test
(Belfast) If you’re in Waldo County this afternoon at 3 o’clock, expect a message to pop up on your cell phone. Waldo County Emergency Management Agency director Dale Rowley tells Star 97-7 that they’re conducting a Wireless Emergency Alert Test. No action is required after receiving the text message, but Rowley says the public is encouraged to give feedback and make comments on the Waldo County EMA’s website.
RSU 24 Building
(Sullivan) – Voters in the 9-town RSU 24 school district will make a final vote in June on plans for a new Sumner High School. The $45-million dollar plan for the new school won initial approval at a straw vote earlier this week. The district has already approved the funding as has the State of Maine. The Bangor Daily News reports the vote planned for June 11th is to approve the final design for the new high school.
Drive-up Mailbox
(Ellsworth) A customer at the Ellsworth post office accidentally backed into the drive-up mailbox in January. Since then customers have either had to bring their mail into the post office or use the mailbox in the rear parking lot. Supervisor Allen Esposito tells Star 97-7 that a shiny new blue box was installed Thursday morning. The mailbox was shipped all the way from Oklahoma to Main Street Ellsworth. Postal customers are so excited to have the drive-up mailbox again that photos are showing up on social media.
Bar Harbor Job Fair
(Bar Harbor) As many as 2-dozen employers looking to fill seasonal and year-round positions in Bar Harbor will be on hand at the local Chamber’s annual Job Fair. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce aims to match workers with employers ahead of the town’s busy season. Job seekers should bring copies of their resume or work history and a photo ID to help with the application process. The job fair is April 27th from 11 AM to 4 PM at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building on Cottage Street.
Wildlife Tracking Workshop
(Sullivan) The Frenchman Bay Conservancy hopes there will be enough snow left on the ground this weekend so they can hold their scheduled wildlife tracking workshop. Spokesman Austin Schuver says bring your mud boots. The rain date is Sunday.
Moose Hunt
(Augusta) Maine’s moose hunters could see another bump in the number of hunting permits this year. Biologists are proposing an increase of 11-percent in moose permits, bringing the total to 2,820. The state hiked the number of moose permits last year, too. The proposed number of moose permits will be subject to approvals before the lottery takes place in June. The hunting season happens in September and October.
Standoff – Snowshoes
(West Paris) Police say a man in Oxford County fired 6 shots at officers serving him an arrest warrant Wednesday. Deputies were investigating 43-year-old Neil Lanteigne for criminal trespass and threatening with a firearm when they realized he was a convicted felon. WCSH-TV reports that Lanteigne was armed with an assault rifle and a handgun Wednesday when he fled on a snowmobile and then ran into the woods on snowshoes. The standoff ended after the state police tactical team was called in. Lanteigne is charged with being a felon in possession of a gun and with criminal trespassing. More charges are likely.
