Peep Camera Sentence
(Bangor) – A Hampden man who admitted he installed cameras in bathrooms at Eastern Maine Medical Center will have 9-months to think things over. WABI-TV reports 58-year old David Waltz pled guilty to 8-counts of invasion of privacy. The former hospital worker admitted he recorded employees while they used bathrooms at the Bangor hospital.
Manslaughter Indictment
(Ellsworth) – Prosecutors presented enough evidence to a grand jury to proceed to a trial against a 33-year old Pembroke man involved in a fatal crash last summer. Merrill Muncey is charged with manslaughter. The car Muncey allegedly drove got off Route 9, over corrected, and crashed, killing 37-year old Tonya Leach of Patten. Muncey suffered minor injuries and will likely be arraigned shortly.
Make Shift Coffee House
(Ellsworth) In the current digital age it seems like a foreign concept, but a face-to-face discussion is planned in Ellsworth where folks can talk about the US Constitution and what the Bill of Rights means. Trenton Selectboard Chairman Fred Ehrlenbach tells Star 97-7 that the organizing committee for the Make Shift Coffee House is deliberately bipartisan. The Make Shift Coffee House is free and open to the public this Sunday afternoon from 2:30 to 4:30 at the Ellsworth High School.
Winter Carnival Update
(Ellsworth) A lack of snow has prompted the Ellsworth Recreation Committee to postpone a few Winter Carnival activities. The snowshoe race, cardboard sled race, and snowmobile rides at the Woodlawn Museum as well as the Clam Boot Classic at Knowlton Park will not happen tomorrow. The Committee says a new date will be announced when or if conditions improve. Still happening as planned, though, are Open Swim at the Downeast Family YMCA and hover-boarding in the gymnasium from 4 to 6, fireworks from Ellsworth High School at 7, followed by Open Mic Night at The Grand at 8 PM. The 2nd annual Ice Fishing Derby is still a go for this weekend.
Moose Population
(Local) Moose biologists with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife continue monitoring moose health and the population to determine how many moose hunting permits will be allocated this year. State moose biologist Lee Canter tells Star 97-7 that the ticks affecting moose are different than the ones that are dangerous to humans. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife now only accepts online applications for the moose permit lottery. Applications must be completed before midnight on May 15th. The Moose Lottery drawing will be held in June.
Football Player Charged
ORONO, Maine (AP) – Police say a standout football player at University of Maine has been arrested and charged with domestic violence assault. 19-year-old Ramon Jefferson was arrested at his home by Old Town police on Wednesday night. They say police responded to a Bangor residence earlier that evening after receiving a call, and a woman who was interviewed identified Jefferson as the suspect.
Trash Sticker Notice
(Ellsworth) The City of Ellsworth is putting the squash on collecting bags of trash with only partial trash stickers attached. The trash collection vendor brought it to the city’s attention that there’s been an increase in the number of trash bags tagged with only half stickers. The city’s trash vendor will no longer collect bags without full stickers.
Brady Shaves
BOSTON (AP) – After a close shave at the Super Bowl, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady got another close shave, this time for charity. The six-time Super Bowl champion got his playoff stubble shaved off Thursday at Gillette headquarters in Boston. Gillette donated $35,000 each to the Boys and Girls Club of South Boston, Best Buddies and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Manslaughter Appealed
ROCKLAND, Maine (AP) – Maine’s highest court is scheduled to hear the appeal of a Tennessee truck driver who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for a 2016 crash that killed two people. A jury previously found 56-year-old Randall Weddle guilty of manslaughter and aggravated driving under the influence among other charges. The Bangor Daily News reports Weddle’s attorney filed an appeal to overturn the conviction, saying the trial court was wrong to allow a roadside blood test among other errors.
Ferry Permanently Departs
(Bar Harbor) – After 2-years of shuttling passengers between Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor, the Schoodic Ferry has ceased operations. The Mt. Desert Islander reports the summer ferry service cited several reasons for shutting down, including financial reasons. The ferry owner said the dock at the Winter Harbor Marina was not suited for its operations. The ferry started in 2016 and shortly afterwards vandals caused thousands of dollars in damage to the boat. The ferry’s owners were still trying to raise funds to fix that damage.
