Eastbrook Fire
(Eastbrook) – An overnight fire has destroyed a home in the Hancock County town of Eastbrook. Firefighters from several communities rushed to the scene on Dinsmore Road around 9:30 last evening. When they arrived, they found a home fully engulfed in flames. There’s no immediate word on whether anyone was hurt. Firefighters from Eastbrook, Waltham, Hancock and Franklin were on scene while several other departments stood by their station.
Clifton Murder
(Clifton) – A 37-year old Clifton man remains in jail without bail after state police homicide detectives accused him of killing his long-time girlfriend on Monday. Dwight Jay Osgood appeared in court yesterday in Bangor. A grand jury will take up his case in the coming weeks with an indictment possible. The judge who denied bail also ordered police affidavits seated at least until the grand jury meets. Police say Osgood shot 35-year old Kary Dill to death early Monday morning.
Traffic Light
(Ellsworth) – Work continues today to replace a traffic light in Ellsworth, damaged many months ago when a motorist slammed into a pole. City IT director Jason Ingalls tells Star 97.7 workers installed a new, permanent mast at the north entrance of the Maine Coast Mall next to First National Bank. The installation has run into problems during the cold weather as water has frozen in conduits and wires could not get strung to the poles. Today the plan is to move traffic detection cameras onto the new mast arms.
Fatal Crash
(Buckfield) – A 24-year old man is dead after a head on collision in Western Maine. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 that the victim’s Volkswagen Beetle crossed the center line of Route 117 in Buckfield and struck a pickup truck head on. Police did not immediately release names, pending family notification. The crash was reported around 5-o’clock last evening.
Coffee with Constituents
(Ellsworth) State representative Nicole Grohoski will meet with the public this Saturday for the first of her “Coffee with Constituents” forums. The casual gatherings are a way for Grohoski to connect directly with residents of Ellsworth and Trenton and discuss topics of interest. The first Coffee with Constituents is this Saturday morning from 8 ‘til 10 at Flexit Café on Main Street in Ellsworth. Other forums are scheduled February 9th and March 16th.
Superintendent’s Contract
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth School Board members voted unanimously this week to extend the contract for Superintendent Dan Higgins. The Ellsworth American reports Higgins’ new contract employs him through 2024 and includes a 3-percent pay raise. He’s been the superintendent of the Ellsworth School Department since 2014. Also announced at Monday’s meeting, principal of the younger grades at EEMS, Cathy Lewis will be retiring at the end of the school year.
Couch Fire
(Montville) The state fire marshal’s office is still trying to determine how a couch caught fire at a home in Montville. The smoke alarm in a Halldale Road home went off around 3 AM Tuesday. Multiple fire departments and first responders were dispatched. One woman suffered seizures in the ambulance but was released from the hospital later that day. Village Soup-dot Com reports a bird and a cat are unaccounted for, but all the humans made it out safely. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Mobile Home Fire
(Wiscasset) A mobile home in Wiscasset sustained extensive interior damage from a fire Wednesday morning. No one was at the Old Sheepscot Road home when the fire broke out. A passerby called to report the fire before 7 AM. The Lincoln County News reports flames were shooting through the windows when firefighters arrived. Investigators say the blaze started in the kitchen but have yet to pinpoint the exact cause.
Portland Priests
(Portland) A list of priests credibly accused of abuse released by the Jesuits includes seven priests linked to Cheverus High School in Maine. Two priests on the list have been accused of abuse occurring during their time at Cheverus. Five other priests named on the list also taught or administrated at the Portland high school. All but 15 of the Roman Catholic priests on the list are dead, and all of the alleged abuse detailed on the list took place before 1997.
LL Bean
(Freeport) L.L. Bean is backing its renewed focus on the outdoors by doubling its charitable giving and channeling all of the new dollars to outdoors-oriented nonprofits. That includes $3-million-dollars over the next 3 years to the National Park Foundation, $1-million-dollars to The Trust for Public Land, and smaller donations.
Fishermen’s Forum
(Rockport) New England’s largest trade show for fishermen is slated to begin the end of February. The Maine Fishermen’s Forum is a major event for New England seafood that attracts harvesters, scientists, marine industry leaders, and politicians to the state’s Midcoast region. Participants will gather at the Samoset Resort in Rockport from February 28th thru March 2nd.
