Expulsion Hearings
(Ellsworth) The Ellsworth School Board will hold a special meeting Monday to discuss the possible expulsion of two students. The Ellsworth Elementary Middle School suspended two students last week after another student reported hearing the pair allegedly discuss committing a violent act at the school the next day. Ellsworth police investigated and charged the students with terrorizing. The expulsion hearings are set for Monday night in the Ellsworth city hall auditorium. The student names are not being released.
Woodbine Cemetery
(Ellsworth) Volunteers will lay about 600 wreaths on veterans’ graves tomorrow at Woodbine Cemetery in Ellsworth. Woodbine board of directors and Ellsworth city council chair Marc Blanchette invites people of all ages to participate in the Wreaths Across America Veterans’ Remembrance event. Wreaths Across America donated the wreaths.
Renys Ugly Xmas Sweaters
(Ellsworth) Folks in the city of Ellsworth are putting on in their holiday “worst” today for Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. Local department stores have had a variety of hideous holiday sweaters to choose from. Renys ladies clothing buyer LeAnn Harris says the uglier the sweaters, the better they sell. And if you want to get ugly from head to toe, Harris says Renys has you covered. The Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce will once again be posting all photos received on their social media pages.
Death Investigation
(Hartford) – A 46-year old Western Maine man is charged with murdering his long-time girlfriend inside their home. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 that Rondon Athayde allegedly killed 41-year old Ana Cordeiro yesterday in Hartford. They have two young children, and the Department of Health and Human Services has custody of them. The couple moved from Miami a couple of years ago. They’re originally from Brazil.
Newport Shooting – UPDATE
(Newport) A Newport man is charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon for a shooting incident Wednesday night in Newport. The Bangor Daily News reports police say Brian Duplisea pulled a gun on an acquaintance outside the Bear’s One Stop on Moosehead Trail and shot the victim 3 times. Duplisea is held at the Penobscot County Jail and is expected to appear in court today (12/14). If convicted Duplisea faces up to 5-years in prison. Additional charges could be added by the DA’s office. The victim’s injuries are said to be serious but not life-threatening.
RCV Suit Tossed
(Augusta) – A federal judge rejected the lawsuit filed by current Congressman Bruce Poliquin against ranked choice voting. In a 39-page decision released yesterday, Judge Lance Walker said Poliquin’s claims are not supported by reality. Poliquin sued after finishing first in his bid for re-election in the popular vote, but not by a majority. When the ranked choices kicked in, Democrat Jared Golden was declared the winner. The 2nd district race is currently under a recount.
Court in March
(Ellsworth) – Two men accused of killing a Winter Harbor man’s dog are due back in court in March. Justin Chipman of Steuben and Nathan Burke of Hancock are charged with cruelty to animals and other crimes for the August death of Franky the pug. Franky went missing while his owner, Phillip Torrey, was out of town. The dog’s body washed up on a shore wrapped in plastic in front of the District Attorney’s cottage. Authorities arrested Chipman and Burke in September. The pair used to work as sternmen on Torrey’s boat. Torrey expressed frustration yesterday at how long it’s taking to adjudicate the case.
Vessel Returns
(Rockland) A Coast Guard crew returned to Rockland this week after a 37-day patrol to the Great Lakes region in support of Operation Fall Retrieve. The crew aboard the cutter Abbie Burgess assisted in removing or replacing more than 12-hundred seasonal navigation aids and serviced two Canadian weather buoys. Abbie Burgess is a 175-foot coastal buoy tender that’s named after a heroic lighthouse keeper from Rockland.
Deputy Director
(Ellsworth) A new Deputy Director is in place at the Hancock County Emergency Management Agency. Hancock County Commissioners last week approved hiring Andrew Braley of Bass Harbor. Braley replaces Bradley Nuding, who now works for the Penobscot County EMA but still resides in Lamoine. The Ellsworth American reports Braley will serve under EMA Director Andrew Sankey and will start Dec. 15th.
