Election
(Undated) – If you’re a fan of political advertisements and robo-calls, you’ll have a little withdrawal after today. It’s Election Day across the nation, and Maine voters are expected to turn out in droves. Absentee balloting is higher than it was 4-years ago when the state elected a governor who is now term limited and says he’s retiring to Florida after the election. Three people seek the seat in today’s balloting. Mainers will use ranked choice voting for the first time in a general election – the first in the nation to do so. The ranked choice option applies only to the US Senate and House of Representatives and not the 3-way governor’s race. Polls close at 8PM tonight.
Pot Shop Bust
(Orono) – Police have shut down a marijuana shop in Orono. WVII-TV reports state and local police raided the home last week, seizing 10-pounds of marijuana and a lot of drug paraphernalia. Officers also seized a lot of marijuana edibles and THC laden cartridges for e-cigarettes. No one is yet charged, but charges are likely. The Town of Orono bans recreational marijuana sales while the community comes up for rules on whether and where the drug can be sold on a recreational level.
Camden Fire
(Camden) – Spontaneous combustion is blamed for a fire at a restaurant under renovation in Downtown Camden overnight. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze at the former Francine’s Restaurant on Chestnut Street. Camden and Rockport firefighters responded to the 10-PM blaze. The Pen Bay Pilot reports the building is undergoing renovations and chemical soaked rags piled inside the restaurant generated enough heat to ignite. No one was hurt, and damage was limited.
Business Trade Show
(Ellsworth) This week’s Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce ‘Business After Hours’ comes with a twist. Executive director Gretchen Wilson explains they’ll combine After Hours with a trade show which they’re calling Business After Dark. Business After Dark is 4 to 7 Thursday evening at the Ramada tennis courts in Ellsworth.
Search for Missing Woman
(Medford) Searchers spent last weekend combing a wooded area in Medford looking for a woman who vanished 2-years ago. District Game Warden Kim Bates tells WABI-TV it’s believed that 71-year-old Diana Estey went for a walk somewhere around her house and got lost. Multiple searches have taken place since Estey’s disappearance in October 2016. The Maine Warden Service says they don’t plan on giving up the search anytime soon.
Deer Hunting Season
(Orrington) Deer hunting is off to a good start with an average of one-thousand deer tagged per day, just 8 days into the season. The Bangor Daily News reports more than a thousand deer were tagged on Youth Deer Day, October 20th. And hunters tagged 2,402 deer on the opening day of firearms season, October 27th. The regular firearms season ends November 24th. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife reports last year more than 27,200 deer were harvested in Maine using all hunting methods.
Planned Outage
(Bar Harbor) Some folks in Bar Harbor will wake up tomorrow without electricity. The planned outage allows Emera Maine crews to work on the electrical system safely. The outage begins at 6 tomorrow and it’ll take utility workers about 2 hours to complete the work. Customers who may experience service interruptions during that time include sections of Rodick Street, Main Street, Kennebec Street and Kennebec Place, Cottage Street, Everard Court, Access Alley and Firefly Lane. The rain date is Thursday morning.
Auto Theft Charge
(Nobleboro) Police have arrested a man following an extensive 4-month investigation into the theft of a 1930 Ford Model A from a garage in Nobleboro. The Pen Bay Pilot reports the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office arrested 53-year-old Brian Cookson on Friday for Burglary and Theft. Detectives located and recovered the antique automobile in Rhode Island where it was sold to an unsuspecting third party. Cookson was booked at Two Bridges Jail in Wiscasset and is out on bail.
Small Town Vandalized
(Washburn) A tiny town in Aroostook County is cleaning up after vandals broke windows through out the community. WAGM-TV reports Washburn police are looking for the suspects that smashed windows during the weekend on at least 3 school buses and the principal’s office, a barn at the Salmon Brook Historical Society, the Washburn Rec Department’s van windows and windows on a maintenance door at Story Hill apartments. Damage is estimated at several thousand dollars. Evidence was collected at a couple locations and the investigation is on-going.
