Bucksport Standoff
(Bucksport) – All is safe this morning on Route 1 in Bucksport after a standoff on Halloween ended without injury. Police took an un-named 57-year old man to a Bangor hospital for a mental health check. Earlier in the day he apparently threatened to use explosives. That prompted officers to shut down Route 1 between Nicholson Avenue and Route 46 and re-route traffic. They also evacuated businesses, including Subway and McDonalds. The State Police tactical team and a bomb squad responded to the scene to assist the Bucksport PD.
Boggia Charges
(Machias) – A former Blue Hill man already in jail awaiting trial for robbery and sexual assault has more charges added on. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 that 33-year old Robert Boggia can add conspiracy to commit murder and arson to the serious crimes he’s alleged to have committed. Boggia allegedly planned to kill a witness to one of the charges. Fire investigators say a 2013 fire at Boggia’s home in Blue Hill was no accident either.
ID Fraud
(MDI) – A 43-year old woman who now lives on Mt. Desert Island faces possible deportation back to her native Philippines after she faked her own death, stole her sister’s identification and moved to Maine. Emilita Arindela lived under her sister Esperanza’s name. She claims that she fled an abusive relationship in the Philippines where divorce is not allowed. The Bangor Daily News reports divorce is not allowed in the Philippines, and that it’s unclear whether Arindela will be deported, despite becoming a US Citizen a few years ago.
DOT Fixes Slippery Road
(Bar Harbor) – The Department of Transportation says a coating of iron oxide onto slippery Route 3 in Bar Harbor should make the road a lot better. Drivers started complaining after construction crews put a seal coat on the road in August. This week a dump truck slid off the road and into a garage. The DOT tells Star 97.7 the coating will help rough up the coating and significantly improve traction for vehicles on the newly re-built road.
Trick or Treating
(Bar Harbor) – Lots of costumed youngsters hit the streets for trick or treating last night. Some places were really busy, like Ledgelawn Avenue. Resident Marie Yarborough has lived there for about 15 years and says the crowds keep getting bigger. Another resident tells Star 97.7 they had more than 830-young visitors last night.
Mexicali Blues Robbed [check for updates]
(Raymond) Police in Cumberland County are searching for a suspect who flashed a knife at clothing store then made off with an undisclosed amount of money. An employee at Mexicali Blues in Raymond called 9-1-1 Tuesday after a man entered the business and demanded money from the cash register. The suspect is described as a white man with an average build wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and jeans. He was seen getting into a silver or gray sedan. No one was injured during the robbery.
Red Sox Trophy Tour
(Bangor) The Red Sox and their World Series trophy are likely coming to Bangor. Leaders of Red Sox Nation North were successful in bringing them to the Cross Insurance Center and the University of Maine Campus in 2013, and co-chair Skip Chappell says they’re working to ensure Bangor is on the New England tour this time as well. Event details should be announced soon once a date has been established.
Illegal Entry Sentence
(Bangor) A man from Quebec Canada was sentenced Tuesday to time-served for illegally entering the US to hunt moose. Court documents say that on October 16th a Border Patrol Agent and a Maine Game Warden followed fresh boot tracks into in Township 5, Range 20 near the border. That’s where they 51-year-old Simon Grenier. He’s spent 15 days in jail.
Mano en Mano Award
(Washington Cty) A community organization based in Washington County is being recognized for its commitment to help farm-workers and immigrants settle and thrive in Maine. Mano en Mano is poised to receive the Grassroots Leadership Award from the Environmental Health Strategy Center of Portland. The honor is given to a leader or group whose courageous grassroots leadership empowers community members to create positive change for environmental health. The award will be presented to Mano en Mano at the 2018 Celebration for Our Healthy Future in Portland on November 29th.
Firearms Charges
(Pittsfield) A Pittsfield man will serve time in prison for buying guns for other people who are prohibited from purchasing firearms. 26-year-old Steven Springer the Second was sentenced Tuesday to 3 years behind bars followed by 3 years of supervised release. Court records say in February 2015, Springer made 2 separate purchases from federally licensed firearms dealers, and on both occasions he falsely reported that he was buying the guns for himself.
New Website
(Gouldsboro) The town of Gouldsboro’s new website is user-friendly and also has a new page for the police department. It’s easier for users to navigate, and one new feature is the police log which allows anyone to review complaints filed and see what the officers are working on. The police blog will have regular entries about the department’s activities. And several forms can be downloaded including a witness complaint statement and an application for a concealed weapons permit. The website is Gouldsboro Town dot Com.
