Slippery New Road
(Bar Harbor) – Perhaps the scariest adventure some people will have this Halloween will be driving on Route 3 in Bar Harbor. Motorists have flooded social media with complaints about a newly built section of the road in the Ireson Hill area. The complaint – it’s very slippery. This week a dump truck trying to slow for stopped traffic hit the newly resurfaced section and slid off the road and into a garage. The Mt. Desert Islander reports no one was injured. The Maine DOT says it plans to put down iron oxide grit on the road surface to help.
Custodian Honored
(SW Harbor) – Staff and students at the Pemetic Elementary School in Southwest Harbor threw a party for their building’s custodian. Pam Priest has worked at the school for 40-years this week. Priest, who lives in Lamoine, was all smiles in her signature Hawaiian style shirt as she held flowers and balloons. She says she doesn’t plan to retire anytime soon.
Rafferty Death
(Portland) – A former TV News Anchor from Portland has died hours after landing in Hawaii to visit a daughter. Doug Rafferty anchored the evening newscasts on Channel 13 in Portland for 21-years. During his tenure he suffered a mild stroke while on the air, but continued working after recovering. He was 66-years old and the cause of death is not yet known.
So. Thomaston School
(South Thomaston) – Voters in the Knox County town of South Thomaston have voted to accept a now vacant school building. Students who attended the Guilford Butler School now attend classes at the brand new school in Owls Head. The town has not decided what to do with the old brick building and 2-and-a-half acres that it sits on.
Roommate Stabbing
(Brunswick) A Brunswick woman has a December court date after allegedly stabbing her roommate with a knife. Police were called to Wadsworth Road late Monday evening and found the 59-year-old victim with stab wounds to her neck and both legs. The Bangor Daily News reports 54-year-old Caril Crosby is charged with Class B felony aggravated assault. Police have not determined a motive for the stabbing. The victim’s condition was not available.
Sub-teacher Sentenced
(Caribou) A former substitute teacher in Aroostook County who raped a 15-year-old female student is sentenced to a year-and-a-half in prison. 24-year-old Colby Conroy of Woodland was teaching at Caribou Career and Technical Center when he was arrested in May 2017. Conroy was convicted last month on several counts including gross sexual assault. WABI-TV reports Conroy’s lawyers have appealed the sentence so he remains free while a judge reviews the appeal.
The Turtle
(Ellsworth) A new restaurant is set to open its doors on High Street in Ellsworth. The old Primavera sign came down Tuesday morning and is replaced by The Turtle. Owner Steve Foss tells Star 97-7 that the staff is ready to go for opening day tomorrow. The Turtle will be open daily serving a full menu from 11am to 9pm, then the bar menu is available from 9 to 11.
Kids Flu Shots
(Bangor) The Bangor police department is partnering with Public Health and Community Services to get kids immunized with the flu vaccine. A flu-shot clinic for kids 6 months to 18 years old is planned for tomorrow afternoon from 3 ‘til 5. The free vaccine will be administered on a first come, first served basis on the second floor of the Bangor PD on Main Street.
EPA Water Concerns
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – A pair of American Indian tribes in Maine is concerned the Environmental Protection Agency will change water quality standards on rivers where members maintain fishing rights. The Penobscot Nation and Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians are involved in a legal struggle over water quality on Maine rivers that also involves the EPA and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
DEP Commissioner Retiring
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Republican Governor Paul LePage says his environmental chief will be retiring. LePage said Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Paul Mercer will retire from state service Nov. 9. Mercer served as head of the department since January 2016. Deputy DEP commissioner Melanie Loyzim will serve as acting commissioner. LePage praised Mercer for protecting natural resources while working with businesses to grow Maine’s economy.
Border Disruption
HOULTON, Maine (AP) – Officials say a man from Canada accused of causing a disruption at the border at Houlton, Maine, that halted traffic for hours is facing charges in his home country. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reports that a 21-year-old man from Halifax, Nova Scotia, has been charged with obstruction in connection with the incident on Friday.
Lincoln Bail Charge
BANGOR, Maine (AP) – A Maine man facing manslaughter charges in a fatal all-terrain vehicle crash has been charged with violating bail conditions. 21-year-old Parker Gardner, of Lincoln, pleaded not guilty Monday to violating bail and reckless operation of an ATV. Gardner is charged with multiple offenses, including manslaughter and driving under the influence in the May 2017 crash that killed 19-year-old Abigail Fiske, of Millinocket.
