Search Warrant Challenged
SWANVILLE, Maine (AP) – A Swanville farmer is challenging a search warrant that allowed animal welfare officials to exhume the corpses of several dead pigs. Agents seized the dead pigs from Jerry Ireland’s Ireland Hill Farms in Swanville and they later became evidence that led to the farmer eventually being charged with 13 animal cruelty counts. The Bangor Daily News reports Ireland is accused of killing his malnourished pigs before they could be inspected. Ireland’s attorney argues the warrant was defective because it wasn’t specific enough and any evidence turned up by it should be suppressed. Prosecutors say evidence filed in a previous affidavit did support a probable cause search.

The Bangor Daily News reports Convoy for a Cause drove from Winterport to Hampden and raised $75-hundred dollars for 2-year-old Enoch McGovern of Lee. The boy was seriously injured October 4th when his mother took her own life by stepping in front of a tanker truck on Interstate-95 while holding Enoch. She died instantly. Apple Crop
(Hiram) There have been a few bad apples, but New England’s crop of its signature fall fruit is only slightly behind last year’s. The New England states don’t produce nearly the same volume of apples as Washington or New York, but apple season is a major tourism draw in the six-state region. The New England Apple Association says this year’s forecast of an average season appears to be mostly on target. Parts of the region have struggled with drought, while others have been pummeled by excessive rain. The rodent population is also booming, leading to pest woes on some orchards. And some growers have struggled with apples that are smaller than normal. But the apple association says the sheer size of the crop appears to be close to last year, with Maine and Massachusetts leading the way.
