Boat Sinks
(Islesford) – An Islesford fisherman lost his boat when it sank off the island last week. The Ellsworth American reports Cory Alley discovered his boat sank while it was moored off Islesford. A crane attempted to raise the boat, but the weather was too rough. Alley said he had planned to repair the engine on the Under Pressure over the winter. The boat was not insured. A Go-Fund-Me campaign had raised $18-thousand dollars for Alley by last Friday.
Tremont Fire
(Tremont) – A propane heater malfunction is the likely cause of a fire that destroyed a camper trailer in Tremont early yesterday morning. The man living in the camper credits a carbon monoxide alarm that he had just installed with waking him up in time to get out along with his dogs. The Tremont Fire Department posts on its Facebook page that they found the camper on Cape Road fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. The occupant was not identified and suffered non-life threatening injuries.
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – The final and longest stretch of Maine’s moose hunt is taking place in central and southwestern parts of the state. The state divides its moose hunt into four sections, and the final one begins on Monday and runs until Nov. 24. Maine increased the number of moose permits by about 20 percent this year.
HIRAM, Maine (AP) – There have been a few bad apples, but New England’s crop of its signature fall fruit is only slightly behind last year’s. The New England states don’t produce nearly the same volume of apples as Washington or New York, but apple season is a major tourism draw in the six-state region. The New England Apple Association says this year’s forecast of an average season appears to be mostly on target.
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Maine Gov. Paul LePage has ordered United States and state of Maine flags be flown at half-staff in respect for the eleven victims of the synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh The Republican governor said Sunday that he and his wife are “deeply saddened by this tragedy, which occurred in a place of worship.” On Saturday, President Donald Trump ordered flags at federal buildings throughout the U.S. to be flown at half-staff in “solemn respect” for the shooting victims.
BUCKSPORT, Maine (AP) – Maine Maritime Academy wants to create a training center at the former Verso paper mill site in Bucksport. MMA wants to create a Center for Professional Mariner Development at a two-story brick building that it’s negotiating to buy, creating an annex to the main campus in Castine.
