Governor Sues AG
(Augusta) – Governor LePage says he will take the Attorney General to the Supreme Court after a superior court judge ruled against the outgoing Republican governor. LePage sued AG Janet Mills who is running for governor for joining a lawsuit with other states in regard to the DACA program that allows immigrant children to remain in the US. A ruling signed last week said the Attorney General has the right to take action when there is no action from the Legislature or Governor. LePage says the AG should only act when instructed to by lawmakers.
Fatal Logging Accident
(Auburn) – A 57-year old man is dead after a log fell on him at an Auburn logging operation. WABI-TV reports a log fell from a cherry picker truck and landed on Thomas Staples of Oxford. He was watching his cousin load the logs onto a truck when the mishap occurred Monday afternoon. The Auburn police department is investigating.
Sedgwick Trash
(Sedgwick) – Three towns that use the Blue Hill/Surry transfer station may look into building their own facility due to delays in opening a trash to bio-fuel plant in Hampden. The Weekly Packet reports Sedgwick, Brooklin and Brooksville have started discussing a new transfer station that would send its trash to the Penobscot Energy Recovery Company in Orrington. The Municipal Review Committee has required the current transfer station to send its trash to a landfill while the Fiberight plant in Hampden is under construction. The estimated opening is now sometime in 2019.
Chimney Cleaning
(Local) Mainers are encouraged to get their heating systems cleaned before the snow flies. Clean Sweep Chimney Services owner Chris Potter says in addition to getting wood furnace flues cleaned, the oil furnace flue should get a checkout. Potter notes that camera inspections the inside a chimney may help find structural issues that aren’t visible from the outside.
Ellsworth Falls Building
(Ellsworth) – The Appeals Board in Ellsworth says it can’t make any decision on whether a dilapidated building in Ellsworth Falls can be destroyed. Webber Energy got a demolition permit from the City’s Code Enforcement Officer, but neighbors have complained that the former Community Center should remain standing. Appeals Board Attorney Ed Bearor said he’s not sure how a demolition permit could be granted because demolition is not addressed in the city ordinances. The Appeals Board voted to delay implementation of the demolition permit, but admitted it probably had no right to do so.
