Escapee Search
(Charleston) – A helicopter hovered over the woods outside the Mountain View Correctional Center in Charleston. Bloodhounds sniffed the forest, and police investigators fielded phone calls from folks with possible clues as to the whereabouts of escaped killer Arnold Nash. The Department of Corrections tells Star 97.7 they’ve brought in surveillance and intelligence officers to help find the 65-year old Hancock County native serving a 45-year prison term for killing his neighbor in 1991. Nash has escaped from prison twice before.
Standoff Arrest
(Machiasport) – A court appearance awaits a 42-year old Machiasport man who allegedly smashed furniture, threatened suicide, and fired a gun outside his home Sunday night into Monday morning. Police captured David Smith around 7-o’clock yesterday morning. A woman and two children inside the home escaped without injury. Smith is held without bail on terrorizing charges.
Nat’l Preparedness Month
(Augusta) As part of National Preparedness Month the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission will conduct a nationwide test of the emergency alert system. MEMA spokeswoman Susan Faloon says the emergency wireless system will also be tested this Thursday. Again the wireless test is scheduled for this Thursday afternoon at 2:18 PM, Eastern Standard Time. The EAS test is programmed for Thursday afternoon at 2:20.
Woman Found
(E. Millinocket) – Nancy Michaud of East Millinocket went for a hike near Baxter State Park Sunday afternoon. When her family and friends didn’t hear from her by Monday, they called for help. The 52-year old is OK – a little dehydrated. Game Wardens found her yesterday near her abandoned car that got stuck about 40-miles northwest of the park.
Senior Lunch & Learn
(Ellsworth) A panel of experts will talk to seniors about what housing options are available in the Ellsworth area for older adults. Friends in Action is hosting a Lunch and Learn this Friday morning at 11:30 at the Moore Community Center. Pre-registration is required by today!
Demo Permit
(Ellsworth) – Workers will start to tear down the dilapidated buildings in Ellsworth Falls that once housed a treasured antique fire truck and served as a polling place for voters. The Ellsworth American reports the city issued a demolition permit to Webber Energy which purchased the buildings from the city in 2005. Webber had intended to repair the buildings but never did. They’re not on the historic register, but the Historic Preservation Commission said they did have local historic interest.
Fire Victim Troubled
(Camden) The Camden woman hauled away from her burning home by an ambulance earlier this month faces previous charges for domestic violence stalking and criminal trespass. The September 10th blaze at 49-year-old Jodi Schiller’s home on Park Street occurred on the same day she was due in court for a hearing and the fire is still under investigation. The Pen Bay Pilot reports police charged Schiller with harassment in May. She pleaded not guilty in August. Schiller was arrested in September for allegedly trespassing on the victim’s property. Last Friday a judge ordered that the expedited bail hearing be rescheduled for the next available date. The new court date has not been confirmed.
Lobsterman Jailed
(Vinalhaven) A lobsterman is sentenced to 45 days in jail for trying to ram a small boat. The Courier Gazette reports 32-year-old Carl Gross of Vinalhaven pleaded guilty last year and was convicted of using his lobster boat to threaten two men by trying to ram their skiff in November 2016. The two men abandoned the skiff and got onto some floats.
Schoodic Scramble Results
(Gouldsboro) The Maine Coast Memorial Hospital “Schoodic Scramble Golf Tournament and Auction” brought in more than $24-thousand-dollars to benefit a local clinic. The money will be used to refurbish patient exam rooms at the Eleanor Widener Dixon Memorial Clinic in Gouldsboro. Every dollar raised supports family medicine services on the Schoodic Peninsula, including women’s healthcare, geriatric care, newborn and pediatric care, lab work, x-rays, immunizations, and more.
Dam Removal
(Sullivan) A Maine conservation group has begun removing a granite dam in Sullivan to make a brook more accessible to fish. The Downeast Salmon Federation says removing the dam from Smelt Brook is “part of a multi-faceted land conservation and habitat restoration project to bring smelt back to the stream.” Removing the dam will connect Smelt Brook back to Smelt Cove, which sits at the foot of Frenchman Bay, allowing smelt, brook trout, and American eels to pass through the area.
