Escapee Search
(Charleston) – A convicted killer from Hancock County continues to confound police search for him after he escaped from a minimum security prison in Charleston. 65-year old Arnold Nash took off last Thursday night. The Department of Corrections tells Star 97.7 they initially believed he was in the immediate area. That area around the Mountain View Correctional Facility is heavily wooded and sparsely populated. Nash was due to be released in about 15-months after his conviction for the 1991 killing of a neighbor in North Sullivan. It’s the third time he’s escaped from prison, but the first during the current incarceration.
Bangor Burglary
(Bangor) – Police in Bangor have arrested three people in connection with a theft from fitness facility. The Bangor Police Department reports to Star 97.7 that 38-year old Bradford Chesley of Dixmont and 34-year old Amy Nadeau of Orrington had stolen property in their possession when they were arrested. They also had crack cocaine. The third person, 54-year old Rebecca Mountain of Bangor, was charged with forgery, theft by deception and receiving stolen property.
Dover-Foxcroft Barn Fire
(Dover-Foxcroft) – A half dozen head of cattle perished when a barn caught fire in Dover-Foxcroft during the weekend. Neighbors noticed flames shooting from the barn at the Thomas Farm on Norton Hill Road around noon-time Saturday. The blaze apparently started in a maintenance garage and spread to the huge barn. Firefighters from at least 7-communities spent more than 8-hours keeping the flames contained to the two buildings, but the barn is a total loss.
Styrofoam Fine
(Belfast) – Belfast will get its first test of an ordinance that bans plastic bags and styrofoam containers as a local restaurant is accused of serving cole-slaw in one of the banned packages. Village Soup dot-com reports a customer complained to city hall that Young’s Lobster Pound served the food in a polystyrene container. The restaurant says it is using up its inventory of the banned containers for patrons who eat food on sight, but the customer in question carried the container off premises.
Maine Ocean School
(Searsport) The Maine Ocean School opened its doors this month in Searsport. Two full time teachers instruct the inaugural group of 11. Chair of the Board of Trustees Eric Jergenson tells Star 97-7 that their home-base is in the Penobscot Marine Museum’s Dunkin House, but the school embraces a town-wide campus vision as it grows. Jergenson says the marine-based education school hopes to double its enrollment numbers next fall.
Clerk Of The Year
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth’s city clerk has been named Clerk of the Year by the Maine Town and City Clerks’ Association. The Ellsworth American reports Heidi Grindle had no idea she was nominated and was recognized during the association’s annual meeting last week. Grindle has been the city clerk in Ellsworth since 2005 and began serving the community in 1996 when she took a part-time secretarial position.
Missing Bangor Man
(Bangor) Bangor police are looking for a man who hasn’t been seen in over a week. 47-year-old Thomas Lynch is described as 6-foo-1 with graying hair and blue eyes. His last known location was in a wooded area near Kobe Restaurant and Wal-Mart on Stillwater Avenue. Anyone with information on Lynch’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact Bangor police.
Cow Shooting Charges
(Emden) A Somerset County man faces criminal charges for allegedly shooting a neighbor’s cow that wandered onto his property. The Bangor Daily News reports 24-year-old Mason Sparrow of Embden will appear in court in November for a Cruelty to Animals misdemeanor. Sheriff Dale Lancaster tells the newspaper “you cannot kill a domestic animal belonging to another person. If an animal trespasses on your property call the animal control officer.”

Recovery Coach Academy
(Ellsworth) Healthy Acadia hopes to beef up the number of volunteers assisting in the recovery process by offering two trainings this fall. Their Recovery Coach Academy is a 30-hour program that teaches participants the skills necessary to lead others down the path to recovery. The first class is September 25th thru the 28th. Lost Man Found
(West Gardiner) A missing man from West Gardner was found safe and well Friday morning. 76-year-old John Marsh was reported missing Thursday when he did not return from a fishing trip in the Duncan Pond region. He was found the next morning driving along Route 201 north of Jackman. Game wardens interviewed Marsh to find out why he was overdue to return home.
Lobster to China
(Maine) The American lobster industry is starting to feel the pinch of China’s tariff on U.S. seafood as exporters and dealers report sagging prices and financial pressure. China is a major buyer of lobsters, and the country imposed a heavy tariff on exports from the U.S. in early July amid trade hostilities between the two countries. Exporters in the U.S. say their business in China has dried up since then.
