Ellsworth Ambulance
(Ellsworth) – City councilors in Ellsworth put off a vote on a plan to place two ambulances inside the fire station at City Hall and provide living quarters for privately employed personnel. City officials say the plan would improve response time to emergency calls. Currently County Ambulance provides emergency service and response time to recent calls was slow because rigs were tied up on other calls. City councilors last night said they wanted more detailed information about the plan.
PI Death Investigation
(Presque Isle) The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death of a man in Presque Isle. Police responded to the Washburn Road on Sunday afternoon. They’ve not made the victim’s name public pending the results of an autopsy at the state medical examiner’s office. Authorities consider the suspicious and state police want to hear from witnesses or anyone with information about the man’s death.
Car Chase Details
(Blue Hill) A car chase spanning three counties required coordinated communication between multiple law enforcement agencies last weekend. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office notified police in Waldo County to be on the lookout for 71-year-old James Thomas of Camden. Police located Thomas in Northport – the chase finally ended in Blue Hill. Hancock County Sheriff Scott Kane says members of his department successfully followed protocol. State Police and the Sheriff’s Department share responsibility overseeing 3 areas of Hancock County. Thomas drove over spike mats but kept driving on 2 flat tires until an officer fired shots that deflated Thomas’s back tires on Main Street in Blue Hill. Thomas’s family tells Village Soup dot-com that he suffers from brain cancer and was not supposed to be driving.
Economic Director
(Ellsworth) – Ellsworth first and only Economic Development Director is stepping down from her post. Mickey Sumpter will move into a part time position in the same job, and then retire in June. Sumpter came to the city after running the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce for many years. City Manager David Cole tells Star 97.7 that Sumpter played key roles in creating the Union River Center for Innovation, the broadband system surrounding the city center, and locating the new Jackson Lab facility.
Talent Show
(Ellsworth) Today’s the last day you can sign up to be in a 2-part talent show hosted by The Grand. Executive director Nick Turner explains contestants will perform at the preliminary this week for a chance to move on to the finals next week. The competition is for ages 10 and up. First place wins $500. Call The Grand in Ellsworth to register.
Harrington Fire
(Harrington) A barking dog and two men driving by a Harrington home early in the morning are credited with helping to save the people living there. The dog woke up its owners and Jeffrey Alley and another man in his vehicle rousted the rest of the people living in the farmhouse out to safety. The early morning fire destroyed a barn and 113-birds along with most of the farmhouse. The fire marshal’s office was on scene yesterday to look for the cause. Shortly after everyone escaped, an explosion rocked the neighborhood.
Sedgwick Crash
(Sedgwick) A crash in Sedgwick closed the Graytown Road for a while yesterday morning. It happened at the intersection with the Mines Road around 10 o’clock when a vehicle crashed into a utility pole, knocking out power to Emera Maine customers in surrounding communities. Police closed the Graytown Road while investigating the crash scene and Emera crews made repairs to the utility lines.
