Mariaville Fire Station
(Otis) – Voters in Mariaville and Otis may decide whether to build a new fire station for the department that covers both communities. Townspeople earlier this month heard about the shortcomings of the current fire station in Mariaville – it has no running water, no bathroom, and some of the trucks don’t even fit in the building. The towns already share a school building. Otis has experienced three building fires in recent months. The Ellsworth American reports voters may decide whether to fund a proposed $750-thousand dollar fire station.
Explorer 20th
(Trenton) – The Island Explorer bus fleet serving Acadia National Park is 20-years old this month. Ridership on the free bus has grown steadily, with just one summer seeing a decline in passengers. The propane powered busses went into service in 1998. Last year saw a record 660-thousand passengers carried, and this year looks to set yet another record.
Murphy – Court
(Ellsworth) – The former treasurer in Blue Hill maintains her innocence following an indictment by the Hancock County Grand Jury this month for allegedly stealing funds from the town. Selectmen fired Jody Murphy after auditors discovered money was missing last year. Murphy appeared in court yesterday – she didn’t say anything but her attorney entered a not guilty plea. Investigators say nearly $18-thousand dollars is missing.
License Suspension
(Augusta) – A man from the town of Mexico who fell asleep at the wheel resulting in a crash that killed two passengers won’t get his license back anytime soon. The State Supreme Court ruled that Joseph Richard, who is now 80-years old, will remain with a suspended license. Richard’s attorney argued that his client was not negligent when he caused the fatal accident in Brewer in 2014. The Secretary of State suspended his license for 3-years.
ATV Crash Update
(Hancock) The Maine Warden Service says two people remain hospitalized after they were thrown from an ATV as it rolled in a crash in Hancock. Game wardens, state troopers and Maine Marine Patrol responded to B & B Drive a little after 8 Wednesday night. The operator, 50-year-old Eric Butters of Hancock suffered serious injuries and was flown to EMMC in Bangor. His passenger, 60-year-old Pamela Jordan of Lamoine was taken to the Ellsworth hospital then also transported to EMMC. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Acadia East Campground
(Gouldsboro) A Maine native has put a new twist on camping by bringing the past-time back to its roots. Acadia East Campground owner Tom Tash says you won’t find fancy bathrooms, playgrounds, or pools at his 9-acre campground on Route 1 in Gouldsboro. Tash says it’s all about the basics. Final Friday Lecture
(Sullivan) The final lecture of Frenchman Bay Conservancy’s Friday Lecture series is tonight at 7. Spokesman Austin Schuver says it’s free and open to the public at Gordon’s Wharf in Sullivan. Schuver says the Maine Bird Atlas is a 5-year survey to document all breeding and wintering birds in Maine.
Young Artists Workshop
(Blue Hill) The Open Air Arts Initiative will host its second Young Artists Workshop in Blue Hill tomorrow. Blue Hill Heritage Trust outreach director Chrissy Allen says they’ve collaborated with Cynthia Winings Gallery to put on the event and provide free materials to all participants. The workshop is from 2 ‘til 4 tomorrow afternoon and space is limited.
Lightning Fire
(Searsport) The fire marshal’s office is investigating whether a lightning strike caused a fire at a mobile home park in Searsport. WVII-TV reports no one was inside the Turnpike Road home when the fire broke out around 5:30 Thursday morning. Searsport firefighters extinguished the blaze but remained on scene to monitor for hot spots.
