Solar Farm
(Twp 16) – Land between a couple of wind power projects could end up as a solar panel farm producing electricity which Emera Maine might purchase. The Ellsworth American reports the proposed 500-acre project would be located in Township 16 between Eastbrook and Deblois. The project required a zoning change to allow the solar panel installation, and the project would also include a substation in order to get the energy onto the grid. Next Phase Energy Services of Casco is proposing the project and is in the process of obtaining permits.
Hancock ATV Crash
(Hancock) – An early evening ATV crash in Hancock has sent one person to the hospital in the Lifeflight helicopter. Local fire and rescue squads freed the rider from his wrecked 4-wheeler and set up the landing zone for the helicopter. The Maine Warden Service is investigating and has yet to release the injured person’s name and condition.
PERC Money
(Stonington) – Several Maine towns that have pulled out of the Municipal Review Committee consortium expect a good sized check this month. The Island Advantages reports at least one town, Stonington, wants to know where the check is. The MRC which is working with a company called Fiberight to build a trash to bio-gas plant is due to refund the fees that withdrawing communities invested while the MRC managed a contract with the PERC plant in Orrington. The payment due to Stonington is nearly $171-thousand dollars.
Schoodic Scramble
(Winter Harbor) The 21st annual Schoodic Scramble is a month away. The charity golf event benefits the Eleanor Widener Dixon Memorial Clinic in Gouldsboro associated with Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. Philanthropy director JoAnn Brown says items are still needed for the silent auction at the Scramble. The Schoodic Scramble is September 15th at the Grindstone Neck Golf Course in Winter Harbor. Slots for the golf tournament are full, but you can get on the waiting list by contacting JoAnn Brown at the hospital.
Friends Of Fort Knox Executive Director
(Prospect) Friends of Fort Knox has hired a new executive director, ending a nationwide search that launched only about 2 weeks ago. A subcommittee of the board was tasked with selecting the right candidate. Board Chairman Carol Weston says many applied, two were interviewed, and the committee ultimately chose retired Army officer Dean Martin. His first day as executive director for Friends of Fort Knox will be September 1st.
Attempted Arson & Assault
(Tremont) A Tremont woman will face a judge next month for allegedly setting her boyfriend’s belongings on fire during an argument. 34-year-old Tricia Roe is charged with attempted arson and also domestic assault for allegedly hitting the victim in the face on August 11th. The Bangor Daily News reports Roe made bail and is due back in Court on September 13th.
Reporter’s Sudden Death
(South Paris) – A political newspaper reporter who worked for the Bangor Daily News and other media outlets has died suddenly. Christopher Cousins suffered a heart attack yesterday. He was 42-years old. He began his career in Brunswick with the Times Record newspaper and moved to the BDN in 2009. Cousins, who leaves behind a wife and two sons, was named one of the 10-most respected journalists in Maine by the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting.
Insanity Plea
(Lewiston) The 76-year-old man charged with stabbing a homeless woman to death outside a laundromat in Lewiston in front of her 11-year-old twins is using an insanity defense. Albert Flick of Auburn entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity Tuesday. WABI-TV reports a judge ordered Flick held without bail for the death of 48-year-old Kimberley Dobbie on July 15th. Flick previously served 30-years for the 1979 stabbing death of is wife.
More Invasive Plants
(Manchester) The Maine Department of Environmental Protection confirms another state-prohibited invasive aquatic plant has been found in Cobbossee Lake in Manchester. The discovery of European frog’s-bit is the first known growth of this plant in Maine. The finding comes on the heels of a recent discovery of Eurasian water milfoil in the same body of water. DEP biologist John McPhedran says it’s unknown how the plant arrived in Cobbosee Lake but measures have already begun to reduce the infestation.
Power Outage
(Brewer) Emera Maine says a squirrel damaged equipment at their substation on Eastern Avenue in Brewer yesterday morning causing an outage for more than 33-hundred customers. Spokeswoman Judy Long reports to Star 97-7 that Emera has experienced more than 300 outages so far this year caused by animal-related contact. But the average for the Bangor Hydro District and the Maine Public District is about 450 per year. Long says Emera has installed animal guarding and is working to install switches that will better protect their equipment.
Fatal Crash
(Waterville) – A Fairfield man is dead after a crash on Interstate 95 in Waterville. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 that 73-year old Bertrand Bard lost control of his Jeep when he went to pass another vehicle. He crashed into trees in the median and died at the scene. Investigators are checking to see whether Bard suffered a medical incident prior to the crash.
