ME Maritime/Verso
(Bucksport) – Maine Maritime Academy says it is still interested in opening an operation at the former paper mill complex in Bucksport. The Ellsworth American reports the Castine based school is talking with the property owner about using the former mill’s training building as an education center. Campus president Bill Brennan said the program would focus on re-certifying mariners and for firefighting training, and could be up and running by the end of the year. A salmon farm is also in the process of getting permits to operate on the AIM Recycling property which that company is currently dismantling.
Old Town Robber
(Orono) – An Old Town man has reportedly confessed to robbing a store in Milford and a bank in Orono. WABI-TV reports 42-year old Richard Moloney admitted to both robberies when police arrested him in Southern Maine. He will face federal charges in at least one of the robberies that occurred within two days of each other last month. DNA evidence found near the scene linked Moloney to the robberies. He told officers he used most of the money to buy drugs.
BHHT Kids Day
(Orland) Kids can investigate bugs and learn about the forest during a special outing with Blue Hill Heritage Trust. Outreach director Chrissy Allen says their Summer Kids Day is a twist on their regular farm tour. It’s free and open to the public Saturday afternoon from 1 to 3.
Body Found
(Trenton) – Authorities have identified a woman whose body turned up on the shore in Trenton yesterday morning. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department says foul play is not involved in 88-year old Barbara Graves’ death. A passerby discovered the body yesterday morning and called police. The Medical Examiner’s office will try to determine how Graves died. The Marine Patrol and Trenton Fire Department assisted in the investigation.
Randy Robinson
(Bucksport) – A well known colleague in the radio industry and former Bucksport School Committee member has died after a long battle with cancer. Randy Robinson worked most of his career in the Ellsworth/Bangor area selling advertising first for the current owners of Star 97.7, and later for Blueberry Broadcasting. Well liked by co-workers and competitors, Robinson was one of the most respected media sales representatives in Eastern Maine. He leaves behind his wife Cheryl and their two adult children. Robinson was 53-years old.
CAT-Ferry Service
(Bar Harbor) Bay Ferries Limited presented a proposal to the town of Bar Harbor Tuesday night to bring back high-speed ferry service to Bar Harbor. Town Manager Cornell Knight tells WABI-TV that Bay Ferries would pay monthly rent during the 5-year-lease, estimating the town would receive $250-thousand-dollars the first year. Bay Ferries also intends to invest about $3-million-dollars in renovating the ferry terminal property. Knight says the agreement would take pressure off the ferry terminal’s property tax. Some residents expressed concerns the town council was moving too fast on a decision. A date has not been set yet for a public hearing.
Meth & Gun Seizure
(Mattawamkeag) – A 29-year old Mattawamkeag faces aggravated drug trafficking charges after drug agents raided his home this week. Bruce McAlpine came onto the Drug Enforcement Agency’s radar after two alleged drug dealers were arrested last week in Lincoln. During a raid of McAlpine’s home, agents seized 2-and-a-half pounds of meth and a couple of rifles. They found six handguns and a sawed off shotgun linked to McAlpine on the side of a road in Mattawamkeag.
Stabber Held
(Lewiston) The man accused of stabbing and killing a woman outside a Lewiston Laundromat while her 11-year-old twins watch is now held without bail. 76-year-old Albert Flick made his first court appearance Wednesday in the death of 48-year-old Kimberly Dobbie. Media reports indicate Flick and Dobbie knew each other. Flick’s criminal record includes serving 30 years in jail for his wife’s murder in 1979. He also spent 2 years in prison for violating release conditions.
Truck Theft Arrests
(Milbridge) Police have arrested both suspects accused of stealing a truck in Milbridge earlier this month. 39-year-old Jessie White and 33-year-old Darcy Webber, both of Easton, are also suspected in a string of motor vehicle thefts including stealing a tractor trailer truck. The Bangor Daily News reports White was apprehended walking along a road in Mapleton on July 5th. Police in Presque Isle found Webber at an Allen Street apartment last Friday.
Conservation Plan
(Ellsworth) The Ellsworth Garden Club is hosting a presentation at the Moore Community Center tonight at 7. The free public event will provide an overview of current conserved lands in Ellsworth and highlight some of the work of the Ellsworth Green Plan. The public will have a chance to voice their opinions at the forum and give input on the plan.
CMP Lawsuit
(Augusta) More than 200 Central Maine power customers have joined a class-action lawsuit saying they were overbilled by the state’s largest utility. The Augusta-based law firm Lipman & Katz said that it plans to file the lawsuit against CMP today in Cumberland County Superior Court. CMP’s problems include customers seeing double usage on their bills.
