CAT-Bar Harbor
(Bar Harbor) – A Canadian ferry service says it will make $3-million dollars in improvements to its former ferry terminal in Bar Harbor and pay the town $200-thousand dollars a year in rent. Bay Ferries Limited has submitted its proposal to resume ferry operations from the terminal just purchased by the town last month. The company currently runs the CAT out of Portland and would cease operations there in favor of returning to Bar Harbor after leaving many years ago.
Lodging Opposition
(Ellsworth) – Plans for a pair of 3-story buildings on Washington Street in Ellsworth drew opposition from neighbors, and the developer will have to revise the idea. The Ellsworth American reports Jonathan Bates presented his proposal for short term lodging units to the city’s Planning Board earlier this month. Residents raised storm water flooding and traffic concerns about the units intended to house summer workers.
Golf Course Owner Passing
(Trenton) – The long time owner and operator of the Bar Harbor Golf Course in Trenton has died. Charlie Crowley was a fixture on the course and in the club house of the golf course sitting just off Route 3 in Trenton and died Sunday evening while working at the facility. He was 58-years old and owned the golf course with his brothers.
Verona Island Crash
(Verona Island) – Two people are hospitalized after a crash between a car and a motorcycle on Verona Island last evening. WVII-TV reports it happened in front of the Fort View Variety Store around 7:15. Investigators say the car had pulled into the other lane to pass a truck when it slammed into the bike. The motorcycle driver went to a hospital in Bangor, the car driver to Ellsworth’s hospital. No names were available this morning.
Hampden Murder – More
(Hampden) – A Hampden man accused of killing his sister-in-law last week said he reloaded his handgun and shot her several times more to make sure she was dead. An affidavit filed in the arrest of Philip Clark indicated that Clark admitted to police that he killed 49-year old Renee Clark last week in his Kennebec Road home. The Bangor Daily News reports Mr. Clark failed to show up for court last week for allegedly violating a criminal trespass order. Mrs. Clark had sought a protection from abuse order against him, but a judge denied the request.
Lewiston Death Arrest
(Lewiston) State police have arrested a 76-year-old Auburn man in connection with a stabbing death in downtown Lewiston. Investigators charged Albert Flick after his release from Central Maine Medical Center. He’s accused of stabbing 48-year-old Kimberly Dobbie to death outside a Laundromat Sunday morning while her 11-year-old twins were present. Flick is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.
Safe Recovery Housing
(Ellsworth) A movement is underway to bring safe addiction recovery housing to the Ellsworth area. Healthy Acadia volunteer and recovering Hancock County resident Mike Tibbetts says when he chose to get sober the closest housing he could find was in Portland. Healthy Acadia has an event coming up featuring the founder and director of Journey House Sober Living in southern Maine, Jesse Harvey. The public is invited to attend the Recovery Housing Presentation and Discussion at the Moore Community Center in Ellsworth next Monday evening at 5.
ATV Crash
(Lagrange) An ATV operator was seriously injured during a crash in Lagrange Sunday evening. 53-year-old Danny Adams of Farmington was carrying 2 juvenile passengers when his machine went off the Railroad Bed and crashed into trees. Both kids were wearing helmets and sustained minor injuries, but Adams was flown to EMMC in Bangor in more serious condition. The Maine Warden Service is investigating the crash.
Firefighter Position
(Ellsworth) The Ellsworth Fire Department is looking for a firefighter-engineer to fill a 56-hour a week position. Qualified applicants must be 18 or older with a high school diploma or GED, must have 2-plus years of fire service experience, and reside within 30 minutes of the fire department among other qualifications. Application packages and professional references must be sent to City Hall by August 2nd.
Security Improvements
(Ellsworth) Security improvements have been made at the Ellsworth police department. Earlier this year a film was placed over the dispatcher’s window, turning the see-through glass into a one-way mirror. The Ellsworth American reports Chief Glenn Moshier says the film offers safety and security of the dispatchers who may have their backs to the window when someone approaches, and it also shields a large monitor installed behind the dispatcher that displays sensitive information. The film cost less than $200 and also turned the window into safety glass.
