Brewer Fire
(Brewer) – A Brewer apartment house is still standing after fire broke out in a 3rd story apartment last evening. Firefighters from Brewer and Bangor kept the fire from spreading to the entire building. No one is hurt – the one person inside escaped without injury. No word yet on a cause of the North Main Street fire.
Bangor Dispatch
(Bangor) – For decades the City of Bangor has employed dispatchers who answer 9-1-1 calls for the city’s police and fire departments, while in another part of the city other 9-1-1 dispatchers answered the same calls for the rest of the county. That came to an end yesterday as the Penobscot County Regional Communications Center will answer all 9-1-1 calls in the county. Bangor will still employ dispatchers who communicate the emergency information to police, fire and ambulance crews. City officials tell Star 97.7 new protocols for 9-1-1 calls prompted them to move the 9-1-1 call answering to the RCC.
Fire Cause
(Ellsworth) – Maine’s fire marshal says drug making caused a February fire on the Christian Ridge Road in Ellsworth that destroyed 3 apartments and a garage. State fire marshal Joe Thomas, who tells the Ellsworth American he doesn’t know who was involved in the marijuana extraction mishap on February 13th. Chris Thornton with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says more people are taking the do-it-yourself approach to making the marijuana based drug called honey oil. Tenant Jesse Hastings suffered serious burns in the February fire. No one has been charged.
Orland Fire
(Orland) – Firefighters from Orland, Bucksport, Penobscot, Surry and Dedham spent the early morning hours yesterday in a losing effort with a mobile home fire. The call to Randall Lane in Orland came in just after midnight and when firefighters arrived a few minutes later heavy smoke was rolling out of the trailer with fire shooting out the windows. No word on a cause; the two occupants escaped without injury.
Author Event
(Blue Hill) A local author will talk about his extensive travels that inspired him write his new book. Blue Hill Books is hosting Hans Carlson, Executive Director of Blue Hill Heritage Trust. Carlson says the book “Walking Toward Moosalamoo” grew out of 3 summers of back-packing. Carlson will read from his newest book “Walking Toward Moosalamoo” tomorrow evening at 7 at the Bagaduce Music Lending Library in Blue Hill.
Pen-Air Quits Early
(Trenton) – Today’s the last day of operation at the Hancock County Airport for one of the two commercial carriers serving the facility. Pen Air is ceasing operations a month earlier than planned. Airport manager Brad Madiera reports to Star 97.7 that they didn’t have time to find another commercial carrier to serve the Trenton airport for a month. Silver Airways will start service in July. Pen Air lost a contract to serve the airport in Presque Isle earlier this year resulting in the pull out from Maine all together.
Drug Sentence [female]
(Canaan) A Canaan woman will spend more than 5 years in jail for possessing fentanyl, heroin, cocaine and crack with the intent to sell it. A US District Court judge in Bangor described 30-year-old Toni Juliano as a “major drug dealer in Central Maine”. Court documents reveal last September, Waterville police seized a large amount of drugs from two of Juliano’s hotel rooms, which violated her previous bail conditions. She pled guilty in December.
Remembrance Ceremony
(Jonesboro) Wreaths Across America is holding a ceremony to unveil the newly designated Medal of Honor Remembrance Park. The 8-acre park is located on the tip land where balsam is harvested for the veterans’ wreaths that are placed at Arlington National Cemetery each December. This Saturday the public is invited to a service at Balsam Valley Chapel in Jonesboro at 10:15 AM, followed by the dedication ceremony for Medal of Honor Remembrance Park at 11:30.
Gun Charges
(Pittsfield) A Pittsfield man admits he gave false information when trying to buy a gun. 25-year-old Steven Springer the Second pleaded guilty Tuesday. Court records say in February 2015 Springer bought semi-automatic pistols from two separate federally licensed dealers claiming they were for him. On both occasions Springer was buying the guns for another person who’s prohibited from purchasing them. Springer faces up to 10-years in prison and a quarter-million-dollar fine.
Click It or Tick It
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth police issued 81 tickets in the past week as part of the Click It or Ticket campaign. The Ellsworth American reports in total motorists incurred more than $65-hundred dollars worth of fines for not wearing seatbelts. The fine for first-time offenders is $85, up from $70 a year ago. The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety funded the annual enforcement detail.
