Training Cruise
(Castine) – That big ship tied to the pier in Castine is getting ready to make its annual training cruise. Maine Maritime Academy reports to Star 97.7 that the training ship State of Maine will depart a week from tomorrow and return to port on July 14th. During the 2-month voyage, the ship will stop in Spain, Portugal, Italy and the Netherlands. On the final leg of the cruise, parents are invited to board the ship in Searsport for the trip across the bay to Castine.
Cadillac Closed
(Bar Harbor) – If you want to enjoy the warmest day of the spring so far atop Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, you’ll have to walk. The National Park Service has closed down the mountain road. The reason: paving. The park service is finishing off a parking lot paving project halted by weather last fall. The road will reopen Friday.
Owl’s Head Fire Sign
(Owl’s Head) – The sign posted in the mid-coast Town of Owl’s Head reads: “Help, or we may as well be closed”. The town’s fire department is looking for volunteers. WABI-TV reports the department has lost several key personnel because of housing issues in the town next to Rockland. The Owl’s Head department relies on other towns for mutual aid assistance. The lack of volunteer firefighters is an issue that has grown in many Maine communities.
Open Mic Night
(Ellsworth) The Grand Theater’s executive director Nick Turner says the last Open Mic Night was so much fun they’re doing another one. Turner says adult talent is sought for Friday evening’s event and they’re hoping for as good of a show as last time. Register for this Friday’s Open Mic Night by calling The Grand in Ellsworth.
Elver-Record Prices
(Ellsworth) This elver harvesting season may set a new record for value. The Ellsworth American reports with more than 5 weeks left in the season the DMR reported this weekend that dealers had already purchased more than 5-thousand-pounds at more than $13-Million-dollars. If the price remains steady until elver season ends on June 7th and fishermen catch the state’s allowed quota, that puts this year’s elver harvest value at over $25-million-dollars. That’s more than double last year’s value and would be the 3rd highest ever.
(Ellsworth) – Baby eels continue to fetch big bucks in Downeast Maine, and the season may go down as a record breaker. Elver fishermen have a quota, and they’re nearing it with 5-weeks left in the season. The Ellsworth American reports dealers have purchased about 5-thousand pounds of baby eels, paying more than $13-million dollars. If the entire quota is met, the eels will bring in about $25-million dollars.
BHHT Spring Lecture Series
(Blue Hill) The final presentation in the Blue Hill Heritage Trust spring lecture series is this evening. Maine Maritime Academy professor Sarah O’Malley will talk about horseshoe crabs, their history and their uses in medicine. O’Malley will explain why these fascinating creatures migrate to the Bagaduce River during spawning season, as well as environmental changes that may impact horseshoe crabs. The lecture is free at the Blue Hill Public Library tonight at 6:30.
Chefs’ Gala Results
(Ellsworth) More than 400 guests attended the 25th annual Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Chefs’ Gala last Saturday. MCMH reports the more than $55-thousand-dollars raised will fund mammograms for women who cannot afford them and will also support care at the hospital’s breast clinic.
Repeated Domestic Assaulter
(Waldoboro) A Waldoboro man with a history of domestic violence is back in jail for allegedly hurting a different victim. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office reports police arrested 41-year-old Jonathan Tarr last month following a domestic incident. Details of the victim’s injuries are not being released but police say the victim was treated at the hospital and later released. Tarr is held without bail for Aggravated Assault and Probation Revocation. The investigation is active and more charges are likely.
Domestic Assault
(Franklin) A Hancock County man was jailed for domestic assault and summonsed for Operating Under the Influence. As a Sheriff’s deputy was responding to a possible domestic assault on Route 182 in Franklin on Saturday he spotted a woman walking alongside the road. The deputy spoke with the woman who said her fiancé harmed her then left the home. Police caught up with 25-year-old Hunter Lurvey and took him to the Hancock County Jail. He’s to appear in court on June 5th.
River Search
(Auburn) Relatives of two Maine boys who fell into a river have started a pair of fundraising sites. The Sun-Journal reports family members are raising money as authorities continue searching the Androscoggin River for a 5-year-old boy who fell in along with his 9-year-old brother last week. Firefighters rescued the 9-year-old and he’s in stable condition at a Portland hospital. Auburn police say the boys’ aunt and uncle both created fundraising pages in hopes of raising $10-thousand-dollars for the family.
Port-a-John Arsonist
(OOB) Police have arrested the man who allegedly confessed to setting two port-a-potties on fire in Memorial Park in Old Orchard Beach on Sunday. The Bangor Daily News reports 18-year-old Ellis Hemenway of Saco turned himself in to Auburn police after a surveillance photo was posted on social media. There are no other suspects in the case but the investigation remains open. Hemenway will appear in York County Superior Court in June for allegedly starting the fire that destroyed two port-a-potties.
