Bar Harbor Fatal Fire
(Bar Harbor) – Maine’s medical examiner looked over the remains of two people recovered from Sunday’s blaze in Bar Harbor, trying to confirm their identities yesterday. Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s office spent much of the day at the scene at the end of the Russell Farm Road looking through what little left of the house for a cause. People who live in the neighborhood tell Star 97.7 the power went out in the area early Sunday morning and minutes after it came back on, the fire broke out. Emera Maine confirms a downed tree cut the power and said linemen restored the electricity.
Wildfires
(Lamoine) – Maine’s forest rangers had a very busy day Monday assisting local fire departments with controlling more than a dozen wildfires that broke out across the state. The warm but windy weather pushed fires out of control, and some folks got tickets for burning without a permit. Locally, fires scorched land in Lamoine, Mariaville, Ellsworth, Sedgwick, Orland and Frankfort. Towns have begun limiting burn permits.
Ambulance Fee
(Stockton Springs) – A controversial proposal to charge a fee for non-emergency ambulance calls will go before voters in Stockton Springs. Village Soup dot-com reports the proposal would allow two free non-emergency calls before charging $100-dollars per call. Town officials say the ordinance is designed to discourage what they call frequent flyers who often call for ambulance workers to pick them up after they’ve fallen, but who do not need transport for injuries.
BMV Training
(Ellsworth) The Bureau of Motor Vehicles will close each of its Maine branches on designated days while their employees take part in communication enrichment training. The instruction will focus on improving self-awareness about generational differences, inherent biases and emotional intelligence. All Northern District branches will be closed for training on Monday, May 21st. This includes Bangor, Ellsworth, Calais, Rockland and Caribou.
Sex Offender Ban
(Augusta) A new law allows Maine towns to ban sex offenders from any state or municipal park, athletic field or recreational facility serving children. The law permits municipalities to prohibit sex offenders from coming within 750 feet of such property. Governor Paul LePage signed the bill into law last week, and it will take effect 3 months after lawmakers return to Augusta to consider LePage’s vetoes. The American Civil Liberties Union of Maine opposed the original bill and said there’s no evidence that sex offender residency restrictions work.
Homicide- 3 Arrested
(Litchfield) Three teenage boys are in custody in connection with the death of a Litchfield woman. State police spokesman Steve McCausland says the body of 47-year-old Kimberly Mironovas was found just after 2 AM Sunday in her home. Three teens have been taken into custody; officials say further information is forthcoming about juvenile court proceedings.
Studded Tires
(Maine) Maine State Troopers are reminding all motorist to remove their studded tires by May 1st. Maine state law prohibits the use of tires with metal studs, wires, spikes or other metal protruding from the tire tread beginning May 1st thru October 1st.
Hypnosis Session
(Ellsworth) A board certified hypnotherapist who’s been practicing in Maine for decades will bring his skills to Ellsworth for a group session. Hugh Sadlier invites people who believe they’ve experienced a past life to his session called Past Life Regression with Hypnosis. Sadlier tell Star 97-7 the intention of past life regression is to heal any underlying personal issues. Sadlier says hypnosis is safe and participants remain in control and can open their eyes at anytime to stop the process. The group session is May 10th at 6PM at EEMS. Space is limited. Body Found
(Lisbon) Police say a woman’s body has been found in a small pond on a private property in Lisbon. The body was discovered around 6 Sunday evening. The woman has been identified as a 61-year-old resident of the town, but her name is being withheld pending family notification. Lisbon Police Chief Marc Hagan says investigators believe the woman drowned.
Schoolhouse Arson
(Casco) Two men are charged with burning down a schoolhouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Maine Fire Marshall’s Office reports 22-year-old Devin Richardson-Gurney and 20-year-old Edward Scott admitted to setting the Friends School House in Casco on fire Sunday and are charged with arson.
College Alum Donor
(Waterville) Colby College says an alumnus has given the school $2.5 million to help students needing financial aid to graduate from the college. Steve Ford has now donated a total of $3.5 million to the Waterville college where he graduated from in 1968, saying Colby helped him financially when he needed it so he wanted to give back. Ford tells the Bangor Daily News that the new money is earmarked toward the general financial aid pool at the college to help students from Maine.
