Bar Harbor Fire
(Bar Harbor) – Two are dead, two others injured after a fire in Bar Harbor. The State Fire Marshal’s office sent a team of investigators and a mobile command center to the scene at the end of the Russell Farm Road yesterday. They’ve not released identities, but say a woman and her adult son perished in the blaze reported about 8-o’clock yesterday morning. Heavy smoke was visible for miles, and firefighters from 8-communities responded to the scene, shuttling about 100-thousand gallons water from a nearby stream to get the flames out. Investigators will attempt to recover the bodies today. Two years ago firefighters responded to a grass and building fire on the same property.
Camp Break Arrests
(Glenburn) – Two young adults with special needs reported missing from their Kenduskeag home are safe but facing charges after they disappeared last Wednesday. Police arrested 21-year old Michael Smith and his 19-year old sister Crystal yesterday morning after a caretaker allegedly caught them breaking into a camp. Deputies say the siblings had spent several days burglarizing camps after their parents reported they had vanished last week.
East Machias Bike Accident
(East Machias) – A 9-year old boy is recovering from injuries after a car hit him as he crossed the Rim Road in East Machias. The Washington County Sheriff’s Department tells Star 97.7 that the youngster sustained non-life threatening injuries. Deputies arrested 25-year old Chris Howard of Cutler for driving without a license. Chief Deputy Michael Crabtree says the accident remains under investigation.
Preparedness Conference
(Augusta) The 10th annual Maine Partners in Emergency Preparedness Conference gets underway in Augusta tomorrow. Maine Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Susan Faloon says this year’s conference focuses more on the recovery aspect. The Preparedness Conference is tomorrow and Wednesday at the Augusta Civic Center. Faloon says members of the public who would like to attend can register on site at 8 AM.
Spring Lecture Series #2
(Blue Hill) The second presentation in the Blue Hill Heritage Trust spring lecture series is this evening. Outreach director Chrissy Allen says a light reception begins at 6:30 with the guest speaker starting at 7. The spring lectures are free to attend at the Blue Hill Public Library.
Elver Poaching Sentence
(Portland) A federal judge has sentenced three men accused of poaching and selling about a million-dollars worth of elvers. An interstate baby eel poaching sting called Operation Broken Glass took down the trio. The Bangor Daily News reports George Anestis of Massachusetts will serve 2-years probation, pay a fine, and pay $33-thousand-dollars in restitution for trafficking elvers poached in his home state and Rhode Island. Charles Good of Massachusetts allegedly did similar activities in his home state and Virginia; he’ll serve 3 years probation and pay a fine. And Mark Green of West Bath will serve a year’s probation and pay $10-thousand in restitution for poaching in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey. All 3 men previously pleaded guilty to each of their charges.
Town to Dissolve
(Atkinson) A Maine town that has tried to stop existing three times because of high property taxes is now close to official dissolution. Atkinson would be the largest town in Maine to dissolve if residents vote for dissolving into unorganized territory this November. The Bangor Daily News reports Governor Paul LePage signed a bill to authorize the upcoming vote.
Bush Plates
(Augusta) Governor Paul LePage has signed a bill creating a specialty license plate for The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. The governor signed the bill Thursday, two days after the death of the former first lady. The plate is expected to raise more than $200,000 annually for the state’s only children’s hospital.
Dead Whale
(Lubec) Maine scientists are curious to learn how a whale found dead and floating in a cove ended up there. People who have seen the whale found in Lubec estimate that it’s about 26 feet long. College of the Atlantic researcher Rosemary Seton confirmed it was a juvenile female humpback whale, though researchers were unable to confirm the exact cause of death.
