Storm Aftermath
(Undated) – Front end loaders will start to move huge snow piles out of the way today after plows cleared streets and parking lots of nearly 2-feet of snow the past two days. Mainers head back to school and work after the third nor’easter in two weeks dumped a lot of snow on the state. Emera Maine reports about 28-hundred customers spent the night without electricity, down from 15-thousand at the height of the storm yesterday.
Wal-Mart Shooting Trial
(Bangor) – A 41-year old New York man is guilty of numerous crimes after a 2016 shooting took place in the parking lot at the Augusta Wal-Mart. Reginald McBride’s trial in Bangor came to a close yesterday. He faces up to life in prison and substantial fines for the June 2016 incident that involved a gun fight and drugs. McBride used numerous aliases in the past and was convicted on felony charges before and could not have a gun. Police caught him after the gunfire and found several guns, drugs and cash in his car.
Sweden Threats
(Vinalhaven) – A 39-year old Vinalhaven man faces federal charges after he allegedly called the Swedish Embassy in Washington DC hundreds of times and left threatening messages. The Secret Service captured Eric Malmstrom in Sanford this week. The Bangor Daily News reports the calls started last September, and Malmstrom was reportedly upset by how he was treated when he visited Sweden more than 17-years ago. Malmstrom has a criminal record – he helped set a fire in Portland that nearly killed a friend.
Deer Isle Drugs
(Deer Isle) The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency raided a home on Little Deer Isle Road they say was the site of a heroin dealing operation. Agents seized heroin, a handgun and other drug related items. Officers hauled three Deer Isle residents to the Hancock County Jail for unlawful trafficking. 27-year-old Kenneth Farrin, 27-year-old Shane Wood and 26-year-old Jared Young all face charges.
Brownville Heroin
(Brownville) A Brownville couple is charged with selling heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine in Piscataquis County. Several undercover purchases were made from the couple’s Page Street home. 49-year-old Robert Wood and 40-year-old Starr Leeman were arrested last week after law enforcement found the drugs, cash and prescription pills during the search.

As plows continued clearing the streets in downtown Ellsworth, Nick Navarre was out with his camera yesterday capturing the moment. (Local) For fitness enthusiasts who insist on walking or jogging outside, Downeast Family YMCA race director Robin Clarke urges pedestrians to make themselves visible to traffic and also be aware of their surroundings.
Winter Safety
(Bar Harbor) Lots of businesses were closed as a result of the storm and many people had the day off. Bar Harbor fire chief Matt Bartlett says even if you plan on staying put inside your home it’s still important to clear the snow from exits promptly. Also be sure to brush the snow off your mailbox or house number so your home can be found easily in an emergency.
Emera-Power Outages
(Local) The heavy wet snow caused havoc for power lines. Emera Maine spokeswoman Judy Long says the snow’s weight is to blame for the bulk of the power outages. At the peak of Emera’s outages yesterday nearly 15-thousand customers were without power. Overnight, nearly 28-hundred customers remained without electricity.
OPEGA chief leaving
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – The founding director of the Maine Legislature’s government watchdog agency says she’s leaving the position in August. The Bangor Daily News reports Beth Ashcroft is leaving the Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability as it’s in the midst of an investigation into Maine’s child welfare system.
Beating Suit
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – A lawsuit in Maine says an 11-year-old boy with mental illness at a juvenile detention center was beaten by corrections officers and denied medical care. The American Civil Liberties Union of Maine filed a lawsuit Wednesday in federal court against the state Department of Corrections, medical care provider Correct Care Solutions and Long Creek Youth Development Center officials.
