(Bangor) – A 49-year old Bangor man is serving jail time for stealing goods from Maine supermarkets and selling them on line. The US Attorney’s Office reports to Star 97.7 that a judge sentenced Anthony Berry to 3-months in jail and 3-years supervised release. Berry entered a guilty plea last May. In addition to the jail time, Berry will have to reimburse Hannaford, Wal-Mart and other stores $9-thousand dollars and pay a $9-thousand dollar fine.
School Shooting Thwarted
(Morrill) – Police in Central Maine may have thwarted another school shooting. An 18-year old living at the Ironwood School in Morrill faces attempted murder charges after officers investigated following another resident’s report that Jack Sawyer planned to shoot up his old school. The Ironwood School is a residential facility for troubled teens. Police searched Sawyer’s car and found a shotgun and books about other school shootings.

PUC Investigation
(Ellsworth) – It was an electrical contractor working to replace a broken utility pole in Ellsworth that knocked out phone service to a lot of people last week. The Public Utilities Commission confirms to Star 97.7 that an auger drilling a hole for a replacement pole snagged phone and fiber optic lines. That cut phone service, knocking out credit card machines at local retailers, even cutting off medical office phones. Utility crews spent several days on the scene, splicing wires under High Street. The broken pole remains in place for now.
Electric Cost
(Maine) Electricity customers in Maine unnecessarily paid $77-million-dollars more on power during a 4 year period. The Maine Public Utilities Commission confirmed the findings in a 2016 investigation by the Bangor Daily News. Between 2012 and 2016 Mainers would’ve saved that money by sticking with the state-regulated power price instead of buying power from retail sellers called “competitive electricity providers”. The newspaper reports Emera lured customers with lower than state-regulated prices then raised its average price, taking in a profit of $58-million dollars. The PUC says it expects to propose rules for consumer protections in March.
