Snowmobile Fatals
(Hermon) – Warden Service investigators say speed and alcohol were factors in a snowmobile crash in Hermon that left a 33-year old man and his 10-year old son dead. Jason Tracy of Hermon and his son both died when their snowmobile struck a tree at the edge of a field at 1:00 Sunday morning. Another fatal snowmobile accident claimed a 53-year old Smithfield man during the weekend. Game Wardens say 53-year old Brian Gatie died when his sled hit a tree at high speed.
ATV Rescue
(Orland) – Firefighters rescued a pair of ATV riders after their machines plunged into Alamoosook Lake. It happened Friday afternoon . Rescuers say both people survived but were extremely cold after the mishap. They say moving water under the ice surface led to weak ice. The fire department was able to pull the 4-wheelers out of the lake too.
UMM Grant
(Machias) – The University of Maine at Machias has landed a $200-thousand dollar grant from former chairman of Shaw’s Supermarket. A spokeswoman tells Star 97-7 the Davis Educational Foundation will improve student retention and academic performance by expanding a program called Supplemental Instruction. That program works with students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math programs.
EMMC Visitors
(Bangor) – The flu has caused at least one hospital to take extraordinary precautions with patient visitors. Eastern Maine Health Care reports to Star 97.7 that all visitors to the Bangor hospital will have to go to a screening area, and if they show flu symptoms, visitation will be limited. They’re not allowing any children under 12-years old to visit patients, and each patient is limited to just two screened visitors at a time. The Senior Vice President at the hospital said they didn’t make the decisions on visitation lightly.
Heart of Ellsworth
(Ellsworth) Heart of Ellsworth invites the public to its next free Community Conversation. Executive director Cara Romano says Wednesday’s guest speaker will highlight the benefits of molding Ellsworth into an Age-Friendly Community. The Community Conversation is Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 7 at Flexit Cafe and Bakery on Main Street in Ellsworth.
Criminal Arrested
(Trescott) State police have arrested a violent criminal from Whiting who eluded police during most of last week. Authorities had asked for the public’s help locating 32-year-old Robert Boggia. He was wanted for a number of felony charges including gross sexual assault and domestic violence. State police and their Tactical Team arrested Boggia at a home in Trescott late Friday morning.
Marijuana Conspiracy
(Bangor) An Etna man admits he helped conspire to manufacture, distribute and possess marijuana with the intent to sell it. 33-year-old James Mansfield pleaded guilty in US District court. From 2010 to 2016 Mansfield worked with others to illegally grow marijuana at a large sophisticated indoor growing facility in Frankfort and sell it. Law enforcement searched the building in May 2016 and seized more than 400 pot plants and other drug related items. Mansfield faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1-million-dollar fine.
Elver Trafficking
(Hyannis MA) A former Maine resident is ordered to serve 3-years probation and pay $141-thousand-dollars in restitution for his role in an Elver trafficking ring. 38-year-old Robert Bowdoin, previously of Woolwich and now from Massachusetts, pleaded guilty last year to selling more than 180-pounds of poached baby eels in South Carolina in 2012. The Bangor Daily News reports Bowdoin and co-defendant Michael Squillace of Woolwich were paid more than $374-thousand-dollars for the catch. Bowdoin and Squillace are 2 of 19 men prosecuted by federal officials for such activity.
Scallop Closures
(Downeast) The Department of Marine Resources is implementing the closure of two scallop fishing areas to preserve the remaining resources and reduce any potentially negative impacts for next year. Effective yesterday Harrington and Pleasant Rivers including Pleasant Bay within Addison and Skillings River and Taunton Bay in Frenchman Bay are closed. Marine Patrol observations along with industry reports conclude that catch rates have slowed in these areas and the remaining tows will impact the following years’ potential scallop resource.
