Weather
(Calais) – Some schools have delayed opening while others have canceled classes for the day as the latest winter storm hits Maine. A coating of snow overnight caused a couple inches of accumulation. That snow changed to sleet and freezing rain along the coast and will change over to rain this morning. The National Weather Service has posted a flood watch, and the rain is expected to be heavy at times.
Community Conversation
(Ellsworth) Heart of Ellsworth will host a series of community conversations to gather public input about how to improve downtown Ellsworth. Executive director Cara Romano says tomorrow’s forum called “What’s Happening in Your Downtown” is the first of 7 conversations lined up for 2018. The community conversation is at Flexit Cafe on Main Street tomorrow evening from 5:30 ’til 7.
Fatal Fire
(Surry) – Firefighters pulled a body from a burning Surry home early yesterday morning and the State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating. The call to the Morgan Bay Road came in at about 11:00 Sunday Night. Little is left of the mobile home that according to town tax records belongs to an Ellsworth realtor. The Medical Examiner’s office is working to confirm the identity of the woman who died inside the home. Fire investigators say the extent of the damage will make it difficult to determine the fire’s cause.
Carmel Fire
(Carmel) Four fire departments responded to a single-story home in Carmel yesterday and say a woman made it out safely. Crews were called to the Fuller Road around 6:30 Monday morning. Hermon fire chief Frank Roma tells WABI-TV because the doors of the home were closed and the home had working smoke detectors, firefighters were able to contain the flames to the living room and kitchen area. The Fire Marshal’s Office will look into the cause.
Fatal Crash-Baby
(Skowhegan) A woman driving to the hospital to have a baby died in a rollover crash in Skowhegan. WABI-TV reports the 27-year-old woman was 9-months pregnant and police say she was scheduled to be medically induced into labor. She was driving on Route 2 around 7 Monday morning when she hit a patch of ice and lost control, causing her vehicle to go off the road and land on the driver’s side. An emergency C-section was performed, but the newborn was in critical condition. The unnamed woman died of her injuries, and an 8-year-old male passenger was also taken to the hospital.
OUI Rollover
(Northport) A Bangor man faces charges after a single-vehicle rollover in Waldo County sent 4 people to the hospital. Responding Waldo County Sheriff’s deputies found the truck off the Belfast Road in Northport on Saturday. Deputies say 2 adults in the truck had been drinking. The driver, 27-year-old Tyler Cotter of Bangor is charged with OUI. He and his passenger 31-year-old Amanda Hendrickson of Hampden are charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child because of two minors in the vehicle. Additionally Hendrickson violated conditions of release. All 4 occupants were treated at the hospital for various injuries.
Snowmobile Injury
(Windsor) The Maine Warden Service says a Windsor man is in serious condition after a snowmobile crash Sunday afternoon. 52-year-old Douglas Morgan was not wearing a helmet when he tried to drive under a low bridge on the Hayden Road in Augusta and struck his head. He was first taken to a local hospital then transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Drug Arrests
(Bangor) Bangor police responding to a hotel for a 911 hang up call inadvertently discovered two women allegedly in possession of drugs. When officers arrived at the Odlin Road hotel around Noon Sunday they learned of heavy foot traffic in and out of two specific rooms. They discovered drug paraphernalia and suspected crack cocaine in one room with 2 women present. 26-year-old Danielle Tomah of Indian Township is charged with Furnishing a Schedule Drug, Unlawful Possession, and Violating Release Conditions. 34-year-old Amanda Newell allegedly had crack cocaine hidden in her clothing, she also faces charges. Both women are in the Penobscot County Jail.
Landlord Jailed
(Portland) A landlord sentenced to jail time following a fire in Maine that killed six people has filed an appeal that cites a vague fire safety code as a factor in the blaze. Gregory Nisbet was handed a short jail sentence for code violations stemming from the 2014 apartment fire, which was the deadliest in Portland in decades.
Murder Trial Day 1
(Bangor) – A judge presiding over a man accused of killing a 16-year old East Millinocket girl in 1980 visited the murder scene and other areas involved in the case as the trial opened yesterday. Prosecutors said that Phillip Scott Fournier confessed to his parents that he killed Joyce McClain, but later changed his story. Defense attorneys say Fournier has head injuries that led to a false confession. Justice Anne Murray is hearing the case without a jury. The trial could last 3-weeks.
