School Threat
(Ellsworth) – Police have sort of tracked down a threat to Ellsworth High School and determined it was not credible. Ellsworth Police Chief Glenn Moshier reports to Star 97.7 the threat came over an internet gaming site and originated in Manchester England. The threat about a planned shooting at Ellsworth High School came in Wednesday evening to a student. Local police got assistance from the State Police Computer Crimes task force, and the District Attorney’s Office got a subpoena for a computer server. The determination that the threat was unfounded came in after the school system called off classes yesterday. Classes will be held as planned today.
Gravel Appeal Dropped
(Surry) – A Surry gravel pit operator and a neighboring property owner have reached an agreement over operating hours and she will drop her appeal of a permit that the town granted. The Weekly Packet reports Scarlett Kinney operates a nursery school near the property where Michael Astbury mines gravel. Kinney had appealed a town permit to allow the pit operation but reached a last minute agreement that will limit noisy activities to daytime hours.
Millinocket Update
(Millinocket) State police confirm the Millinocket couple hospitalized late Tuesday evening both suffered gun shot wounds. 33-year-old Diem LaPierre is recovering at EMMC in Bangor, but her husband, 59-year-old Wayne LaPierre is in much more serious condition. Detectives continue to investigate why someone entered the LaPierre’s home on Massachusetts Avenue Tuesday evening and shot the pair. Their 2 children were not home during the time of the shooting and are now staying with other family members.
Retired Trooper Arrested
(Buxton) A retired Maine State trooper from Buxton is charged with selling cocaine and fentanyl. Drug agents intercepted 51-year-old Jeffrey Linscott delivering fentanyl to a suspected buyer in the Hannaford parking lot in Gorham late Wednesday evening. A search turned up drugs, packaging materials, scales and cash. Linscott and others have been under the microscope for alleged drug sales throughout Cumberland County. Linscott served 22 years with the state police and retired in 2010.
Sedgwick Crash
(Sedgwick) Police say speed and alcohol were likely factors in a Sedgwick crash that injured 3 people. The accident on the Byards Point Road happened around 11 Wednesday evening when 24-year-old Alec Peasley of Deer Isle failed to negotiate a curve, went off the road and hit a tree. Peasley and passenger 22-year-old Tyler Bartlett of Stonington went to the hospital by ambulance while the Life Flight helicopter transported the other passenger, 21-year-old Lucas Oliver of Deer Isle. Police say the trio did not appear to be wearing seat belts, but none of the injuries are life-threatening.
Arson Arrest
(Bangor) Bangor police arrested a 20-year old man in connection with several vehicle fires in the city. On October 23rd police were called to Linnehan’s Rightway Auto on the Griffin Road where 3 vehicles were on fire. Then on November 3rd police responded to Kenny U-Pull on the North Bangor Road where multiple vehicles burned. Wednesday detectives arrested Ethan Getchell, who’s charged with 2 counts of arson. Getchell met with detectives a few days before his arrest.
Lebanon Fire
(Lebanon) State police say a Lebanon man intentionally set his house on fire and then shot himself. Fire Marshals and State Police investigated Wednesday morning’s fire on the Shapleigh Road. They found a gun and gas container near 58-year-old James Avery’s body. The state medical examiner’s office confirmed Avery’s cause of death.
Thrift Store Donation
(Blue Hill) Tree of Life Food Pantry and Turn-Style Thrift Shop got a nice holiday boost thanks to a local market. Since early November the Tradewinds in Blue Hill has been collecting donations at their registers. Patrons donated nearly $7-thousand-dollars and Tradewinds matched the first $5-thousand. On Wednesday Tree of Life was presented with two checks totaling almost $12-thousand-dollars. The food pantry and thrift store is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, but will be closed all next week for the holidays.
SCF Fundraiser
(Jonesport) Down East Community Hospital’s Annual “Light A Life” celebration brought in more than $8,000 for Sunrise Care Facility in Jonesport. Last week’s event featured music, crafts, homemade snacks and photos with Santa. SCF will use the money to make improvements at their facility on Ocean Street.
Firefighters Head West
(New England) Firefighters from New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and New York are heading to California to assist with fighting wildfires. Firefighters left Thursday for Ventura County, California, to help suppress the Thomas Fire in southern and central California, which has grown to more than 271,000 acres. The crew will be deployed for 14 days.
