Ellsworth – School Closed
(Ellsworth) – School officials in Ellsworth have closed school for the day today. Superintendent of School Dan Higgins tells Star 97-7 they received an undisclosed threatening message and they decided to cancel classes for the day. The Ellsworth Police department is working with the school department to track down the source of the threat.
Warden Plane
(Eagle Lake) – A game warden pilot is OK but his plane likely suffered substantial damage after it broke through thin ice on Eagle Lake in Northern Maine. Warden pilot Jeff Spencer had altered his landing pattern due to high winds and taxied across the ice toward the plane base when his Cessna broke through the ice. A spokesman said the ski equipped plane partially sank up to its wings. Spencer got out of the plane without injury and the Warden Service is working on plans to retrieve the plane and assess the damage.
Former EPD Officer shoots NC Man
(Ellsworth) – A man who did not make it through his probationary period with the Ellsworth Police Department is implicated in a shooting in North Carolina. The Ellsworth American reports 36-year old Stephen Hughes called police in Wilmington North Carolina to report he shot a marine who allegedly tried to break into his home. The initial indication is that Hughes claimed the shooting was in self defense. Hughes worked for about a month for the Ellsworth PD, and the paper reports he was let go when he failed to make it through his probationary period.
SW Harbor Ships
(Southwest Harbor) – A town committee is Southwest Harbor is getting ready to recommend that the town stay off limits for cruise ships. The Mt. Desert Islander reports the preliminary work following a 180-day moratorium on cruise ship use is an ordinance that bans ships carrying more than 50-passengers or is longer than 150-feet. A 240-foot yacht that dropped anchor last summer caused some problems in the harbor. A final version of an ordinance is still a ways off.
Sedgwick Crash
(Sedgwick) – State Police are investigating a crash that injured 3-people in Sedgwick overnight. WABI-TV reports the Lifeflight Helicopter flew one person from the scene. Pictures from the scene show a pickup truck that appeared to slam head on into a tree. The crash occurred on Byards Point just past the Herrick Road at about 11-o’clock last night.
Child Porn Sentence
(Windham) A Windham man is sentenced to 3-years in prison and 10-years of supervised release for possessing child porn. 52-year-old Matthew Miller is also ordered to pay a $5-thousand dollar special assessment fine. The Maine State Computer Crimes Unit determined Miller had been searching for and downloading images on his computer using a peer-to-peer file sharing network.
DARE Graduation
(Ellsworth) Fifth graders at Ellsworth Elementary Middle School graduated from the Dare program yesterday. Officer Shawn Merchant of the Ellsworth police department has been guiding the 85 students in Drug Abuse Resistance Education for the past 10 weeks .
Toddler Homicide
(Bucksport) State police say a 2-year-old girl in Bucksport died at the hands of someone else. Detectives have not publicly named any suspects. Lt. Troy Gardner said the toddle’s death is classified as a homicide. Informed sources tell Star 97.7 the child died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen. Bucksport police and rescue personnel responded to a Central Street home on October 18th and found the unresponsive child who lived with two adults and another child.
Millinocket Incident
(Millinocket) – State Police are not saying how a Millinocket couple suffered life threatening injuries Tuesday night, but they’re both under treatment at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Neighbors say the two, who apparently were in the midst of a divorce, suffered gunshot wounds. The Millinocket hospital went into a temporary lockdown after the two victims arrived. State Police say someone else entered the home on Massachusetts Avenue Tuesday, but it’s not clear whether that person forced their way in or was invited. Relatives tell Newscenter the know of no reason why anyone would attack the couple.
Beer Truck Burglary
(Ellsworth) A beer vendor delivering to an Ellsworth store stopped a local man from stealing a case of Bud Light. The Ellsworth American reports police were called to Mikes County Store on Water Street around 8AM December 13th. A man reportedly took a case of beer from the delivery truck, but the driver chased the suspect and was able to retrieve the $28 product. The suspect fled but a Hancock County deputy found 31-year-old Nicholas Stanley minutes later and issued him a summons for burglary of a motor vehicle.
CT Drug Arrest
(Wells) A Connecticut man driving through Maine didn’t reach his destination because he’s in the York County Jail on drug charges. A state trooper stopped a car on Interstate-95 in Wells for several violations Tuesday evening. The driver, Abijah Williams was found to be in violation of a protective order because he wasn’t supposed to have contact with the woman in the passenger seat. Criminal indicators were observed and a police K9 was called in to search the car. Police seized 56 grams of crack cocaine and 400 bags of fentanyl. Williams is charged with 2 counts of Aggravated Trafficking and Violating a Protection Order. The woman is also facing drug charges.
Ethics Commission Meeting
(Augusta) The Maine ethics commission met Wednesday to discuss its investigation into the financing of a failed, multimillion-dollar effort to build a third casino in the state. Ethics commissioners last month levied a record-setting $500,000 in fines against the four committees behind the referendum to allow a casino in York County. Commissioners said the committees missed deadlines for filing disclosures that accurately reflected who was funding the campaign.
