Snow
(Ellsworth) – Business as usual today despite several inches of snow that fell starting yesterday afternoon. Driving is pretty good this morning as plow crews have scraped and salted the roads to make them a lot less slick than last evening. Emera Maine reports all the power is on and schools are open as scheduled today. Police reported quite a few cars slid off the roads last evening as the snow stuck hard to the road surfaces.
Ellsworth Arrests
(Ellsworth) – Police have arrested two Eastbrook residents in Ellsworth after getting complaints about suspicious activity. WVII-TV reports officers arrested 32-year old Theresa Graham on warrants for drug trafficking. While they responded to a call at a local hotel, a man fled from the scene, but a nearby restaurant called and reported suspicious activity in a bathroom. Officers arrested 36-year old Matthew Hardison. Investigators recovered several items taken in a burglary reported around the same time as the other calls.
Assault Arrest
(Deer Isle) A Stonington man was arraigned Monday on charges of Aggravated Assault, and OUI. Late Saturday evening a passing motorist saw 34-year-old Carlos Villarreal allegedly hitting a woman next to a vehicle pulled over on Route 15 in Deer Isle. The witness intervened and also called the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Frank Jennings helped arrest Villarreal who is held on $750 cash bail. His dispositional conference is scheduled for February 15th.
Flu Season
(Maine) As flu season begins to ramp up the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reminds everyone to cover coughs, stay home if sick, wash hands regularly, and go get a flu vaccine. State epidemiologist Dr Siiri Bennett says so far this year Maine is seeing one particular strain of the virus; Influenza A. Dr Bennett says it’s not too late to get a flu shot. She recommends setting it up with your primary care physician or going to any local pharmacy during their regular businesses hours.
Choker’s Trial
(Belfast) A Belfast man arrested last December is on trial this week for allegedly holding a machete to a woman’s throat and threatening to kill her and her 3 children. Police arrested 41-year-old Shawn Kivlin 2 days after Christmas last year on numerous domestic violence charges. WABI-TV reports Kivlin is also accused of hurting one of the children; his trial is scheduled to wrap up on Wednesday.
Ayla Reynolds’ Investigation
(Maine) It’s been 6 years since Ayla Reynolds disappeared but police continue to investigate. Ayla was 20-months old and in her father’s care in Waterville went she went missing in December 2011. In a statement to WABI-TV Ayla’s step-Grandfather writes that the family conveys their best wishes to all those who continue to seek justice for Ayla, and it’s their hope that the tragedy that befell on their family never touches anyone else’s. A judge declared Ayla legally dead back in September.
Waitress Tipped
(Ellsworth) An Ellsworth waitress going through some hard financial times was given a nice Christmas surprise from one of her customers. WABI-TV reports Trisha Murphy’s car was towed last Friday, but she tried to put the stress behind her and went to work at Denny’s on Saturday. That afternoon she waited on a table with 3 men whose bill came to $35, but she received a $500 tip. Murphy was too overwhelmed to catch their names, but says she can’t thank them enough for what they did for her family.
Nomination Papers Earlier
(Augusta) – You may have noticed many municipalities are advertising that nomination papers for town meeting elections are now available and need to be turned in earlier than usual. That’s because of a change in state law. Deputy Secretary of State Julie Flynn tells Star 97.7 the law changed to accommodate printing needs for towns that use tabulating machines. This is the first year of the new deadline which passed in the Legislature last summer. Many towns have a very early January deadline to submit signatures to get on the spring ballots.
