Authorities found a North Carolina snowmobiler dead early Wednesday morning near Rockwood. The Maine Warden Service tells Star 97.7 that 55 Year-Old Willard Hartsock, from Old Fort, NC, died in a snowmobile related incident near Rockwood. The scene indicated that Hartsock approached a wet area on the snowmobile trail, stopped, and placed the snowmobile in reverse. While in reverse, the machine rolled onto Hartsock. (Wiscasset) – A 4 year old Wiscasset girl’s death remains under investigation by State Police. Spokesman Steve McCausland tells Star 97.7 an ambulance responded to a 9-1-1 call last Friday reporting the little girl was unresponsive. She died shortly after the ambulance crew got her to the hospital. The youngster lived with her grandfather and his fiancée. Authorities have not released the results of an autopsy.
Sentencing
(Belfast) – It’s 13-years in prison for a Waldo County woman convicted of killing her 7-week old son earlier this year. Miranda Hopkins testified that she smoked pot and drank liquor and passed out that night and had no idea how the baby boy died. She initially told investigators that her two others sons who are severely autistic may have killed him. The state removed the two other boys from her care. Hopkins will report to prison the day after Christmas.
Indictments
(Ellsworth) – Grand jurors have indicted a Sorrento man whose animals were seized last week by state officials. The Hancock County grand jury found there was enough evidence to proceed to trial against 51-year old Mark Calcia on reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and other charges. Hancock County deputies arrested Calcia in November. Last week state animal welfare officials removed 44-animals, including rats, from Calcia’s Sorrento home.
(Ellsworth) – A 36-year old Penobscot woman faces numerous charges after the Hancock County Grand Jury indicted her this month. Young Trial
(Bar Harbor) – It won’t be until at least next March before a judge rules on a lawsuit against the Town of Bar Harbor by former police chief Nathan Young. Weeks of testimony wrapped up in the case, including testimony from all 7 town councilors involved in upholding Young’s firing by former town manager Dana Reed. Young insists he should have kept his job after officers found him slumped over the wheel of his pickup truck. The town said Young defied orders by the town manager not to have contact with officers involved in the case while he was on leave.
Marine Patrol Shooting
(Machiasport) – The Department of Marine Resources has finally released the name of the Marine Patrol Officer who shot and wounded two people last weekend in Machiasport. The Bangor Daily News reports Officer Matthew Carter of Marshfield is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Attorney General’s Office. Carter became a Marine Patrol officer in October and is a former Washington County Deputy and also serves in the National Guard. He wounded armed robbery suspect Jason Jackson and his girlfriend Tiffany Smith inside an apartment on Corn Hill Road. Jackson allegedly held up an East Machias woman earlier in the day last Saturday.
