Lincoln Fire-Arson
(Lincoln) – Those fires at the closed Lincoln Pulp and Paper mill this week were no accident, and there was one more than initially reported. State Police and Fire Marshals arrested 59-year old David Parsons of Lincoln yesterday, charging him with 3-counts of arson. Parsons used to work at the mill and his daughter tells Newscenter he has mental health issues. 10-fire departments responded to the mill Wednesday, putting out fires in the scale house and a storage building. A third fire extinguished itself before firefighters could respond.
Unity Crash
(Unity) – Two people suffered serious injuries in a car crash in Unity. Waldo County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Nick Oettinger reports to Star 97.7 that 35-year old Brandi Reynolds of Unity left a stop sign at the intersection of Route 220 and Depot Street and collided with a machine delivery truck. She and 56-year old Patty Bishop of Unity went to the hospital. The 73-year old truck driver was uninjured. The Sheriff’s Department and State Police reconstructed the crash.
Acadia – Lighthouse
(Bass Harbor) – The iconic Bass Harbor Light House will become part of Acadia National Park. The Mt. Desert Islander reports the Coast Guard will transfer responsibility for one of the nation’s most photographed lighthouses to the park in the coming year. Park land completely surrounds the light house and the Coast Guard will continue to maintain the beacon, but the park will maintain the rest of the complex. Park officials are looking at options for generating revenue, including vacation rental, or possibly a coffee shop at the keepers residence.
Pot Forum
(Ellsworth) Four community leaders spoke at Ellsworth city hall Wednesday evening about how retail marijuana could impact the community. Panel member Representative Louie Luchini said the original citizen initiative bill to legalize retail marijuana required some major language adjustments, which he fixed with an emergency bill.
Pimp Sentenced
(Portland) A New York man will spend time behind bars for shuttling a woman across state lines with the intent that she engage in prostitution. Court documents say in March 2014, 30-year-old Donovan Miller, the alleged victim, and a 3rd person traveled by bus from Portland to New York City. Miller took the victim and 3rd person to a hotel where they met up with a another woman. The victim’s prostitution services were then posted online with a phone number belonging to Miller’s long-time acquaintance. A judge sentenced Miller to 15 months in prison and 5 years of supervised release.
Single Crash
(Devereaux Township) The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single vehicle accident that ejected the driver. It happened just before Noon Wednesday on Route 9 in Devereaux Township. The 911 caller stated a vehicle struck a utility pole and the driver was lying on the ground. Police say 35-year-old Brett Reid of Whiting appeared to have lost control, struck a guard rail causing the vehicle to become airborne and hit a utility pole. Reid was thrown from the vehicle and taken by life-flight helicopter to EMMC with unknown injuries. Emera Maine was asked to suspend services near the crash site during clean-up and repairs.
Eastbrook Crash
(Eastbrook) A crash in Eastbrook sent 2 people to the hospital with serious injuries Wednesday. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department reports 52-year-old Darlene Haslam pulled into a parking lot on the Eastbrook Road where her truck spun around and struck a telephone pole guy wire. That caused the truck to accelerate and spin around again before crossing the road and striking a tree. The Life Flight helicopter took passenger Trudy Pickard to EMMC in critical condition; passenger Scott Pickard first went to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital then was transferred to the Bangor hospital. Haslam and a male passenger refused medical attention at the scene. The crash is still being investigated.
K9 Finds Suspect
(Winter Harbor) Hancock County’s new police dog sniffed out an Aroostook County woman hiding from police in Winter Harbor. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office tells Star 97-7 they assisted Maine State Police on Wednesday finding the woman involved in a domestic incident who fled the scene on foot. 32-year-old Marissa Ouellette of Fort Kent had 2 active arrest warrants. Deputy Travis Frost brought K9 Finn to track into a field where Ouellette was last seen. Within minutes Finn alerted that someone was nearby. Ouellette got up from the ground and surrendered; she was arrested without incident and transported to the Hancock County Jail.
Public Access Deal
(Machiasport) Machiasport residents voted to spend $150-thousand dollars to purchase land that will allow public access to the ocean. The Land for Maine’s Future Board will match that amount to help buy the 23-acres of land. The parcel is currently owned by 14 heirs of the Pettegrow family and has been in the family for 200 years. WVII-TV reports they hope to close the deal next spring, benefiting kayakers, public safety officers, commercial fisherman and many other people needing access to the ocean for a variety of reasons.
