Body Mystery
(Schoodic Point) – Authorities are still trying to identify a man whose body floated to the surface off Schoodic Point back in 1990. State Police spokesman Steve McCausland reports to Star 97.7 there are no missing person reports that match the man, and they’ve consulted with Canadian authorities and have found no leads. The man wore mostly Canadian clothing. A pleasure boater discovered the body in August of 1990 about 8-miles east of Baker Island and 8-miles south of Schoodic Point.
Judges Confirmed
(Augusta) – The latest political posturing in Augusta has apparently blown over and five judges up for reappointment received confirmation yesterday. Included were superior court justices Robert Murray and Ann Murray of Bangor and District Court judge Bruce Jordan of Veazie. Governor Paul LePage had written to senate and house leaders to withdraw their nominations, but his office later rescinded the withdrawal. It’s not clear what led the governor to send the letters.
Bradley Fire
(Bradley) – The high fire danger may come to an end later today and tomorrow. Heavy rain is expected tomorrow after weeks of extremely dry weather. That’s sparked a lot of wildfires, and some continued to burn overnight in Maine. Bradley firefighters and mutual aid companies will hit an 11-acre fire again this morning to try to contain the flames which died down in the cool, humid air overnight. The Maine Forest Service tweeted that the scene was only about 10-percent contained yesterday, but no structures were threatened. Another fire scorched a few acres in Wesley Monday.
Students Charged
(Ellsworth) An incident at Ellsworth High School earlier this month has led to charges against 3 teen-aged boys. Authorities will not identify the youngsters or go into detail about what happened. Detective Dotty Small says a 16-year-old from Waltham, a 15-year-old from Ellsworth, and a 14-year-old from Surry are all charged with Unlawful Sexual Touching, Assault, and Criminal Threatening. The school board last night held expulsion hearings for three students – it’s not known if they are the same three.
Standoff Ends
(Corinna) – A standoff ended in Corinna Monday when a police dog subdued a man with a gun. Newscenter reports that police charged 55-year old Gregory Frank with Domestic Violence Assault. State Police rushed to the scene around 7-15 yesterday morning and quickly called in the tactical team when Frank refused to come out of a home on the Packard Road or to put down a gun. It was over by yesterday afternoon. Prosecutors will review the case to see if other charges will follow.
Real Estate Market
(Hancock County) Real estate agents say the residential real estate market in Hancock County is strong. Sargent Realty president and co-owner Dan Sargent says this year buyers are primarily purchasing existing homes rather than building new structures. Sargent says weather does play a role in the real estate climate. While most people try to avoid moving during winter, Sargent says when weather conditions are warm and pleasant, houses continue to be listed and purchased.
DV Arrests
(Maine) October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and state police are cracking down on domestic violence offenders. A statewide effort targeted dozens of violators with outstanding arrest warrants, some dating back decades. A team of 28 troopers fanned out across Maine last Thursday and arrested 6 men total in Chesterville, Gray, Brownfield, Livermore, Thomaston and Ellsworth. Offenses ranged from violating protection orders, failing to appear in court, domestic violence assault and probation revocation.
Marijuana Hearing
(Stockton Springs) Selectmen in Stockton Springs want to know how residents feel about recreational marijuana in their town so a public hearing is set for next month. Village Soup-dot Com reports town administrator Courtney O’Donnell presented selectmen with 35 pages of information including sample moratoriums and ordinances already adopted by other Maine towns. O’Donnell urges action on the issue before retail marijuana licenses could potentially be issued next February. The public comment session at the Stockton Springs town office is November 2nd at 6PM.
Cadillac Mt Closure
(Bar Harbor) A portion of the parking area on Cadillac Mountain is closed in Acadia National Park. Spokesman John Kelly says repaving has begun and will keep that section closed through this Friday. Cadillac Summit Road is open and visitors can park in the remaining spaces at the summit or at the Blue Hill Overlook about a quarter-mile away. The paving project is funded through the Federal Highway Administration’s federal lands transportation program.
Suspect Arrested
(Berwick) A Maine man is held in a New Hampshire jail awaiting extradition. Maine state police say a warrant for burglary and theft was issued October 7th on 37-year-old Timothy Hudon of Berwick. He was wanted in connection with an incident at Dee’s Diner in Lebanon. The United States Marshal’s Task Force was contacted in an effort to locate and arrest Hudon. On October 23rd Hudon was located in Rochester New Hampshire and arrested by task force members. Hudon was transported to the Strafford County Jail where he’s held until being extradited back to Maine.
Businessman Passes
(Hancock) A beloved Hancock County businessman has died. Dick Jones of Hancock passed away Sunday night at a Bangor hospital. Co-owner of Shirley’s Yarns and Crafts in Hancock with his wife of 64 years, Dick and Shirley celebrated 45 years in business this past spring. Jones sold mobile homes during the 70’s, added on the yarn shop, and then fulfilled a lifelong dream when he operated Hot Diggity Dog for 13 years across the street from Shirley’s. Jones was 86.
Ellsworth Accident
(Ellsworth) An accident seriously injured a pedestrian at the Union River Bridge in downtown Ellsworth. It happened during rush hour Friday afternoon, snarling traffic city wide while ambulance crews treated 78-year-old Clement Storer of Ellsworth. Police say 74-year-old James Fox of Surry was blinded by the sun and didn’t see Storer crossing Main Street between 2 stopped vehicles and not at the crosswalk. The accident is still under investigation. Chief Glenn Moshier says he last heard Storer was at Eastern Maine Medical Center where he had been moved out of ICU.
