Child’s Death
(Bucksport) – State Police are investigating a 2-year old’s death in Bucksport. Local police responded to a Central Street home at about 7-o’clock yesterday morning and called in State Police. No information about the child’s death has come from either police agency. State police routinely investigate deaths of any child under 3-years old.
Orrington Woman Found
(Orrington) – Searchers fanned out around Orrington yesterday after a man reported his wife missing. As word spread over social media, a motorist spotted 73-year old Joan Warren sitting in some bushes in Holden. She had gone for a walk and didn’t return home right away and suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Police picked her up and returned her home without injury.
Storage Unit Breaks
(Rockland) – Burglars working along Route 17 in Knox, Lincoln and Kennebec Counties have targeted storage units. Village Soup dot-com reports a police task force in the three counties and including state police has started comparing notes about the thefts. At least 37-storage locker thefts have occurred since the first of the year. Investigators say the burglars have used cutting torches and bolt cutters to get into the storage units. Police have solved only two of the thefts with arrests.
Crime Down
(Augusta) – Crime Statistics compiled for last year showed a decrease, but police say drugs are still a driving factor in crime. State Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland released the report to Star 97-7, saying over all, crime dropped 6-point-7 percent in 2016, the fifth straight year of a crime drop. There were increases in arson, rape and aggravated assaults. Arson cases more than doubled in 2016. Decreases came in burglaries, theft, homicides and domestic violence.
Preparedness Course
(Bar Harbor) The Hancock County Emergency Management Agency is conducting a disaster preparedness plan geared toward individuals, families and even business owners. The two-hour course will teach disaster preparedness planning to prevent or lessen the effects of natural, man-made, or technological emergencies that could affect our communities, including pets, livestock and at-risk people. The free course is at MDI Adult Education in Bar Harbor tonight at 6PM.
Fire of ’47 continues
(Bar Harbor) The Criterion Theater will screen the documentary about the great Bar Harbor Fire this evening at 7. The film first showed to a sold out crowd October 1st. Fire of ’47 director Peter Logue was among the patrons that night. Created for the Bar Harbor Historical Society, Logue says even though the film is specific to this area, people from anywhere can relate to its message:
Main St Fire
(Ellsworth)-Fire caused minor damage to an office building in Downtown Ellsworth yesterday, and it may have started in dry leaves. Four fire departments responded to the fire yesterday at 198 Main Street. Ellsworth Fire chief Richard Tupper tells Star 97-7 they got the call around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon. He says the fire stayed on the exterior of the building that contains several offices and an apartment. Assistance came from Hancock Lamoine, Trenton, and County ambulance. No one was hurt.
Fire Safety
(Ellsworth) October is Fire Prevention Safety Month. The Ellsworth Fire Department’s annual open house is this Saturday from 10am ’til 2pm. It’s a chance to meet fire fighters, explore the fire station and learn about fire safety. Deputy fire chief Gary Saunders says a focus this year is candle safety.
Rotary Honors
(Ellsworth) Two students from the Hancock County Technical Center were recognized Tuesday night by the Rotary Club of Ellsworth. Rotary president Scott Kimball tells Star 97-7 Liam Brennan was honored as student of the month in the Automotive Technology program by instructor Hunter Havel. Jesse Jenkins was honored in the Law Enforcement program by instructor Scott Ballargeon [ba-large-ion]. Also during the Rotary’s meeting they presented Sheriff Scott Kane with a check for more than $860 to purchase a bullet-proof vest for Finn, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department’s new K-9. Kimball says the timing was perfect as Finn just recently began active duty.
Dog Vest
(Ellsworth) The new police dog at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department will soon sport a bullet-proof vest. Sheriff Scott Kane received a check to cover the cost of Finn’s vest during the Ellsworth Rotary Club meeting Tuesday night. President Scott Kimball says they raised the money through the Rotary’s Happy Dollar program this year, and the timing is perfect as Finn just began active duty for the sheriff’s department.
Town Manager Quits
(Lincoln) – The town of Lincoln is looking for yet another town manager after John Sutherland tendered his resignation yesterday. Sutherland had held the job for about 10-months. Last February police issued a summons to Sutherland after he allegedly broke into his daughter’s boyfriend’s home to take pictures of truck damage. The town council in Lincoln met last night to discuss how to proceed finding a new town manager.
Trailer Theft
(Hollis) Maine state police are investigating the theft of a cargo trailer housing a Polaris ATV side-by-side. The items were taken from a home in Hollis sometime between October 1st and 8th. The possible suspect vehicle is a dark colored pickup truck that was seen at the home that week. State police are asking for the public to be on the lookout for the stolen trailer or ATV and say you can contact them anonymously on their website.
Check Thefts
(Wilton) Authorities have recovered most of the more than $21-thousand dollars stolen from the Wilton town office and they’ve charged a teen with theft. The Sun Journal reports a stack of checks worth $19-thousand-dollars and $28-hundred-dollars in cash went missing. Police charged a 17-year-old boy with theft on Monday. Security policies and procedures at the town office are now under review.
