High Street – Broken Sewer
(Ellsworth) – Traffic is reduced to one lane on busy High Street in Ellsworth this morning as repair crews deal with a broken sewer pipe. The Ellsworth Police Department says the broken pipe is at the Maine Coast Mall entrance near First National Bank, the same spot where a vehicle crashed into a traffic light pole last week fouling up traffic.
Fatal Crash/Drugs
(Bar Harbor) – Investigators say they recovered drug evidence from a vehicle that barreled into the Chart Room Restaurant in Bar Harbor a month ago, killing a woman in the parking lot. The Mt. Desert Islander reports police found three glass containers with marijuana, pills, two bottles of vodka, and empty marijuana laced packets in 36-year old Justin Shell’s vehicle. Shell suffered a seizure when is car went off Route 3 on September 12th. He’s charged with manslaughter.
Collins – Gov
(Rockport) – Today is decision day for Maine Senator Susan Collins. She’ll announce today whether she’ll jump into the Governor’s race for next year. Collins has served in the US Senate since 1996, priding herself on never missing a vote. Collins will make her announcement at an event in Rockport. It’s a crowded field of both Republicans and Democrats already vying to replace Republican governor Paul LePage.
Detroit Explosion
(Detroit) Fire investigators say a worker cleaning dust and sulfur out of an empty silo with a shovel created a spark that caused an explosion and caught his clothing on fire. 62-year-old Anthony Towers of Newport is being treated for extensive burns in Portland. Also atop the 86-foot silo at Northeast Agriculture Sales was co-worker Clarence Rider of Pittsfield. He extinguished Towers’ clothing and both men climbed down a ladder where employee Lee Gustin of Cambridge assisted the two men. Gustin and Rider were taken to a nearby hospital complaining of respiratory issues. The fire marshal’s office is still investigating.
Art of Ellsworth
(Ellsworth) Main Street in downtown Ellsworth comes alive tomorrow with artist demos in blacksmithing, jewelry and fiber arts. It’s Art of Ellsworth-Maine Craft weekend in conjunction with the Maine Crafts Association’s statewide celebration of crafts. Save the Whales
(Bar Harbor) College of the Atlantic is reviving the 1970’s “save the whales” movement with a holiday campaign geared toward marine lovers. “College of the Atlantic’s Adopt-a-Whale program supports critical research and conservation efforts for endangered humpback and fin whales. They say it’s the perfect holiday gift with 11 different whales to choose from. When you adopt a while you’ll receive an adoption certificate, photos, a biography and a sighting history of your whale. The money goes to Allied Whale at College of the Atlantic, an organization that houses the oldest and largest dedicated whale photo identification program in the world. Robbery-Guilty Plea
(Bangor) A Connecticut woman has admitted to assisting her husband with robbing a bank and a department store in Bangor. 30-year-old Cara Blewitt of Oakville Connecticut pled guilty Wednesday to charges stemming from the crimes last May. Court documents say Blewitt drove the getaway car for Seth Blewitt who first allegedly robbed a TD Bank branch, and then a Dollar Tree store at gunpoint the next day. The Blewitt’s were arrested within minutes of the Dollar Tree robbery. She faces up to 20 years in prison, a quarter-million-dollar fine and full restitution.
Home Robbery
(Bangor) Residents of a home on Brown Street in Bangor say 3 men forced their way into the house and tied them up early Thursday morning. Bangor police tell Star 97-7 the victims were not seriously hurt, but the thieves stole cash, jewelry and electronics. Investigators say this probably isn’t a random act, however everyone should be diligent about securing doors and windows. Anyone with information about the 3 suspects is encouraged to contact Bangor police.
Standoff Arrest
(Eddington) An Eddington man who barricade himself inside his home and told police to “come in after him” is charged with creating a standoff. Maine state police went to the home Sunday evening for a welfare check. 48-year-old John Myrick refused to leave the residence for 3 hours, then was arrested immediately upon exiting. Myrick caused extensive damage to a bedroom. Charges include aggravated criminal mischief, domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening, refusing to submit to arrest and causing a police standoff.
Volunteer Meeting
(Ellsworth) The next Hancock County Drug Free Community’s meeting is Monday. If you’ve participated in any of Healthy Acadia’s recent Recovery Coach Academies or if you’d like to learn about becoming a recovery coach you’re encouraged to attend. Healthy Acadia spokeswoman Denise Black says there are many ways you can get involved in the recovery movement, such as coaching, helping with prevention materials, and engaging parents and youth. The meeting is at Ellsworth City Hall from 3 to 4:15 on Monday afternoon.
Ugly Sweater Day
(Ellsworth) National Ugly Sweater Day is December 15th. The Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce is trying to get everyone in the city to participate on the same day this year. Chamber executive director Gretchen Wilson tells Star 97-7 many local businesses have an Ugly Sweater or Holiday Sweater Day, but the Chamber wants to get all businesses and schools to unite and maybe the whole city could break a record! Wilson says the Ugly Sweater Day plan is still in the developmental stages.
