Rockland Explosion
(Rockland) – An explosion inside a Rockland garage injured three people overnight, sending one of them to a hospital by helicopter for burn treatment. The Pen Bay Pilot reports firefighters responded to the call on 9-Wharf Street just before 10-o’clock last night. Fire Chief Chris Whytock said hot grinding material ignited an acetone container, leading to the explosion. The chief said firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.
Steer Captured
(Unity) – A steer that escaped from the Common Ground Fair in Unity last weekend is back with its owner after several days on the run. Village Soup dot-com reports the rare Wagyu steer had spent days in the shade in wooded areas and wandered around at night. Jason Stutheit and his daughter captured the black steer Wednesday, and he was none-too-happy to head home in a crate truck. Stutheit said it was tough to find the bovine because it would only move at night, and its black fur made it difficult to spot.
Historic Fire
(Bar Harbor) A panel of scientists and fire management specialists will speak at the Criterion Theater in Bar Harbor to address the great Acadia fire that wreaked havoc on the area 70 years ago. 1947 has been called “The Year Maine Burned.” On October 17th 1947 a fire started in Bar Harbor that spread throughout town and Acadia National Park, all while other wildfires sprang up across the drought-stricken Northeast. Officials from the Maine Forest Service, Acadia National Park, the Northeastern Forest Fire Protection Commission and fire chiefs from MDI communities will be at the Criterion Theater on October 17th to discuss the Great Acadia Fire 70 Years Later, What happened, Could it happen again, What if it happened again. Emmaus Fundraiser
(Ellsworth) The Emmaus Homeless Shelter is asking each Hancock County resident to donate just 10-cents to their Make A Change campaign. Through October 18th collection containers are set up at a few businesses in Ellsworth, with that money helping the shelter expand on what they already do. Assistant director Stacey Herrick says it’s also an opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about charitable giving, as she did with her 8-year-old daughter. Donations can also be brought to Bangor Savings Bank in Castine, Bucksport and Ellsworth, or brought directly to Emmaus Homeless Shelter in downtown Ellsworth.
Riverside-Parker Donations
(Ellsworth) Staff at the Riverside Cafe in Ellsworth continue to grieve over the loss of a coworker and friend. 26-year-old Liza Parker died Sunday in a single car accident on I-95 in Old Town. Her 5-year-old son and 18-month old daughter survived the crash, strapped into their car seats for more than 18 hours until a trucker spotted the wreckage. The Riverside Cafe is taking up a collection to help pay for Parker’s funeral arrangements and assistance for the children. Donations can be made at the restaurant on Main Street in Ellsworth.
Program Fraud
(Portland) A Gorham woman will spend 3 months in prison for federal program fraud. Once released Jamie Hussey will be on supervised release for a year and must pay back more than $92-thousand-dollars in restitution. Court documents revealed Wednesday say Hussey embezzled money from the South Portland House Authority between February 2014 and September 2016. She illegally caused 48 checks to be issued in the names of program participants and deposited them into her personal bank account.
Motorcycle Fatal
(Belmont) The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office says a 72-year-old Winterport man who died in a motorcycle accident Wednesday did not wear a helmet. Deputies responded to the Augusta Road in Belmont around 3 o’clock. A woman in a Ford Focus made a left turn onto Fenwick Road and failed to yield to Michael Bennett’s motorcycle. Trying to avoid the crash Bennett laid his motorcycle down and was ejected. He died in the ambulance on his way to Waldo County General Hospital. It’s the 9th motorcycle fatality in Maine this month, the 20th for the year. .
Wild Arrest
(Howland) A wild ride for a Penobscot County deputy transporting a Howland man to jail. Deputies investigating a family fight on Third Street Wednesday arrested 32-year-old John Havlin for Domestic Violence Assault and Unlawful Sexual Touching. Havlin cooperated at first, then became violent during the ride on Interstate-95. He released his seat belt and tried to open the door while making suicidal threats. Corporal Ryan Fitch grabbed Havlin by the shirt to keep him in the car until he could pull over. Havlin escaped and ran up the travel lane into on-coming traffic. Havlin was tased after a foot chase, then Lincoln police already en-route to jail with another prisoner picked him up for the rest of the ride to jail.
Business Burglaries
(Glenburn) The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is investigating burglaries to two businesses in Glenburn. Thieves hit Harvey RV on Route 15 and Tuffy Bear Furniture on the Pushaw Road sometime Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. Investigators are working with other area law enforcement agencies. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.
Power Outage
(Ellsworth) More than 1900 Emera Maine customers lost power late Thursday morning when a tree limb fell on a line on the Mariaville Road. Spokeswoman Judy Long reports customers in Ellsworth, Amherst, Clifton, Mariaville and other nearby communities were affected. Crews also worked to restore power to customers in northern Maine after a thunderstorm Wednesday night.
