Wanted Man Arrested
(Machias) – Drug agents got word that a suspected drug dealer from Connecticut was back in Machias after he posted bail and skipped town last February. They called in the heavily armed tactical team and raided a Center Street home late Monday. Sure enough, 19-year old Rafael Santiago-Salazar was there, but he fled out a back door. Didn’t take long for the tac team to catch him. He was charged in February with dealing in crack and heroin. Two others in the home went to jail on outstanding warrants.
Mall – Loan
(Bangor) – The company that owns the Bangor Mall risks defaulting on an $80-million dollar loan. The Bangor Daily News reports that Simon Property Group has only paid the interest on a loan that it took out 10-years ago. Morgan Stanley Capital has turned the loan over to a troubled debt specialist. A recent appraisal valued the mall at just over $66-million dollars, far lower than the 2007 appraisal of $128-million.
Plane Passengers-Airport
(Trenton) – The Hancock County airport in Trenton should be eligible for a million dollars in federal assistance thanks to an increase in passengers last year. The Ellsworth American reports the temporary addition of Elite Airways helped push the passenger number over 10-thousand, making the airport eligible for the federal funding. Elite has stopped operating at the Trenton airport and manager Brad Madiera says it’s unlikely the airport will hit the 10-thousand passenger mark this year.
Fentanyl Bust
(Biddeford) A non-fatal overdose in Bath on Sunday led drug agents to arrest 5 people in southern Maine the next day. Police kept on eye on 21-year-old Devyn Pushard on Monday afternoon as he and two women drove to the Biddeford WalMart and sat in the parking lot. They were met by 25-year-old Glenn Hagan who allegedly delivered 42 grams of heroin-fentanyl. Agents arrested Pushard, Hagan and the two women on the spot. The investigation then sent police to the Maine Mall in South Portland where they intercepted a Massachusetts man waiting to deliver 50 more grams of the drug.
Autumn Gold
(Ellsworth) Businesses in Ellsworth are gearing up for this weekend’s Autumn Gold events starting tomorrow thru Sunday. Ellsworth Chamber executive director Gretchen Wilson says Saturday is a full day of activities ranging from the Car Show at Home Depot to Chowder Fest at Harbor Park. Wilson recommends parking at one location and taking the free shuttle from City Hall or the RF Jordan parking lot. The free shuttles run from 9am to 3pm on Saturday.
Child Abductors
(Owls Head) The Knox County Sheriff’s Office encourages parents to talk to their kids about strangers after an incident Monday afternoon. Deputy Tim Carroll tells Village Soup-dot-Com that 3 men in a van approached a girl walking home on Ash Point Drive in Owls Head and offered her a ride. The girl said no but the men kept insisting she get in. The girl ran and hid in the bushes until the van drove away, then she ran home to report the incident. She said the white van has a small donut tire on the passenger side. The driver is described as black haired with a beard, and one of the passengers had blond hair and no facial hair. The investigation continues.
Nat’l Recovery Month
(Ellsworth) Coinciding with National Recovery Month, Healthy Acadia has special seminars planned for next week. Spokeswoman Denise Black says the Recovery Coach Training is Monday the 25th thru Thursday the 28th at the Ramada Inn in Ellsworth. Contact Healthy Acadia for more details.
Nat’l Preparedness Month
(Maine) The Maine Emergency Management Agency continues offering tips to Mainers as September is National Preparedness month. Spokeswoman Susan Faloon says the theme for week 3 is practicing and building out your emergency plans. Faloon also says you should maintain emergency savings, participate in a local emergency drill, and know how to access community resources such as food banks and shelters.
Threatener Arrested
(Friendship) A 43-year-old Friendship man is behind bars for allegedly threatening to kill a woman and her children and burn down their house. Police tell Village Soup-dot Com that Jonathan Sevon was arrested on charges of felony domestic violence criminal threatening, domestic violence terrorizing, and criminal threatening. Sevon was on probation for a 2016 domestic violence assault against the same victim. Police say Sevon resisted arrest and repeatedly spit at and threatened a deputy during Sunday’s arrest.
Gun Theft Plea
(Portland) A Harpswell man faces up to 10-years in prison and a quarter million dollar fine for stealing guns. 36-year-old Hyunkook Korsiak pleaded guilty Tuesday in US District Court to theft of firearms from a federally licensed dealer. Court records say on January 3rd Brunswick police responded to a burglar alarm at C and R Trading Post and found a broken window. A police K9 located several firearms, a sledgehammer and drops of blood on snow in nearby woods. The blood was tested and confirmed to be that of Korsiak. In April he admitted he stole the guns and now he awaits sentencing.
Drug Arrest
(Lyman) A member of the Pro-Active Criminal Enforcement team made a big score last Saturday when he pulled over a truck that turned out to be transporting drugs. Maine state police say 33-year-old Michael Mendoza was pulled over in Lyman and the trooper suspected there were drugs in the truck. While searching the vehicle Mendoza took off running but was quickly tackled by an officer. Troopers confiscated a bag of cocaine, packaging materials, and a scale. Mendoza had more than $12-hundred-dollars cash on him plus an EBT card that didn’t belong to him. He faces several charges and more arrests are likely.
