Armed Robber Arrested
(Bar Harbor) – A convenience store clerk in Bar Harbor told police a man pulled a knife and demanded money from the cash register late Tuesday night. The clerk waited for the robber to leave then called 9-1-1. Bar Harbor police tell Star 97-7 officers spotted 26-year old Sean Lavoie walking on West Street Extension – he matched the description and they arrested Lavoie without incident. He’s charged with class “A” Robbery.
Pastor – Probation Violation
(Tremont) – A former pastor convicted on child pornography charges now faces accusations he violated probation conditions. The Mt. Desert Islander reports 63-year old Wayne Buchanan violated conditions by conducting an internet search for rubbin butts. Buchanan told police it’s a brand of barbecue sauce. Prosecutors praised Buchanan for taking extraordinary steps to seek treatment, and even started a sex offenders anonymous program. A judge sentenced Buchanan in August, and one of the conditions of probation limited his computer use.
Parking Lot Fatal
(Ellsworth) – The District Attorney in Hancock County says a 36-year old Virginia man made a poor choice by driving while he was exhausted. Police say Justin Shell drove 13-hundred miles between Saturday and Tuesday morning and likely fell asleep at the wheel when his truck careened off Route 3 in Hull’s Cove into the parking lot of the Chart Room restaurant. The truck struck and killed a woman standing in the parking lot. Shell is charged with manslaughter and appeared in court yesterday. His attorney called the crash a tragedy, but not a crime.
Krause Privacy
(Rockport) Family members of the Rockport man accused of killing 4 people last week are asking for privacy. The Bangor Daily News reports the lawyer representing the Krause and Lackey families released a statement Tuesday expressing appreciation for the support they’ve received and their deepest sympathies to the family of Bertha Parker, the caretaker who was one of 4 the victims. 22-year-old Orion Krause allegedly used a baseball bat to kill his mother and her parents Frank and Elizabeth Lackey inside the Lackey’s home in Groton Massachusetts; Parker’s body was found outside. Krause is held without bail and will undergo a psychiatric evaluation before his next court appearance October 30th.
Preparedness Month
(Maine) This week’s theme for National Preparedness Month is “plan to help your neighborhood and your community”. MEMA spokeswoman Susan Faloon says that includes things like checking on neighbors or talking to your power company about utility safety. Faloon says she hopes on Friday Mainers will be particularly mindful of making an effort to embrace the preparedness movement.
HCSO Promotions
(Ellsworth) – Hancock County’s Sheriff has promoted a pair of deputies. Sheriff Scott Kane named Corey Bagley as a patrol Lieutenant following Chris Thornton’s move into Bagley’s former job as supervisor for the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency. And deputy Frank Jennings is now a detective, filling the post held by Ben Astbury who resigned a couple weeks ago.
Baby’s Name
(Rome, ME) An Army veteran who lost all four limbs in an explosion in Afghanistan says the name of his newborn son pays tribute to two medics who helped save his life. Travis Mills runs a retreat in Maine for combat-injured veterans. He says his son’s name, Dax, is a mashup of the medics’ names, Daniel and Alex. He says that without them, “We would not be where we are today.”
Hiking Challenge
(Sedgwick) Time is running out to participate in the Bagaduce Hiking Challenge. Blue Hill Heritage Trust outreach director Chrissy Allen says hike the 8 selected trails within the Bagaduce Watershed, keep track of the “secret image” on each trail, and enter for prizes this Saturday at a celebration at Strong Brewing Company in Sedgwick from 5 to 7PM.
