Reed Retiring
(Tremont) – The town manager in Tremont is retiring after spending about 30-years running communities on Mt. Desert Island. Dana Reed submitted his resignation this week to the Tremont Board of Selectmen. The Mt. Desert Islander reports Reed will step down December 1st. He and his wife both plan to travel and fish in retirement. Reed was the long time town manager in Bar Harbor before resigning in 2014 and taking the job in Tremont.
Suspect ID’d
(Brewer) – Brewer police have finally identified a man they caught allegedly burglarizing a home. The Brewer Police Department reports to Star 97.7 he’s 33-year old William Shea of Nebraska. They arrested Shea earlier in the week after he allegedly broke into an occupied home. He refused to give his name. Turns out Nebraska authorities want Shea on felony burglary charges. Brewer officers recovered a stolen pickup truck and stolen property linking Shea to crimes in other states.
Arson & Assault Arrest
(Bangor) A Bangor man who allegedly threw a bottle containing a flammable substance during an argument is charged with Arson and Aggravated Assault. Bangor police and fire went to a Hudson Street apartment building Wednesday night where the victim received minor burns and did not require medical treatment. A spokesman reports to Star 97-7 officers arrested 53-year-old Robert Smith Thursday afternoon and is held at the Penobscot County Jail on $20-thousand-dollars bail.
Heart Research Grant
(Bar Harbor) – A $750-thousand dollar grant is headed to Bar Harbor to help research new treatment for heart tissue damaged by heart attacks. Novo Biosciences, a spinoff company of the MDI Biological Laboratory will get the grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Tire Fire
(Newport) – Black smoke has billowed from a pile of burning tires in Newport since Tuesday. Firefighters tell WVII-TV they’ve kept the blaze from spreading, but they’re going to let it burn out because there is too much heat and not enough water and foam to put it out. A lightning strike likely started the fire behind a construction company on Elm Street in Newport.
Lamoine Tree Crash
(Lamoine) – A Lamoine man who was named the citizen of the year by the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce this past spring isn’t sure if it was good luck or bad yesterday after a tree limb fell and hit his truck. Donald Clark was headed home on Route 184 when he heard and saw the limb from a dead tree start to fall. He jammed on the pickup truck’s brakes, the limb hit his hood, inches away from the windshield. Clark was uninjured, the truck is badly damaged.
Furry Friends Family Fair
(Cherryfield) Pet lovers are invited to the Ark Animal Shelter’s Furry Friends Family Fair tomorrow. Executive director Vincent Ewald says despite the forecast in Cherryfield they’ll host the 2nd annual event tomorrow from 11AM to 3PM. Additionally Ewald says the Dog Show starts at Noon with prizes for kids and adults for categories of best costume, most obedient, best groomed, showmanship, best trick and best friend.
Maine Wienerfest
(Belfast) Often referred to as wiener dogs – a celebration of dachshunds is planned for Sunday in Belfast. Maine Wienerfest is now in its 14th year and will gather at the Steamboat Landing Park from 11 to 3.
Ride for Life Testimonial
(Surry) Rain or shine, bicycles will hit the Blue Hill peninsula tomorrow for the Beth Wright Center’s 13th annual Ride for Life. Amy Westcott with VNA Home Health Hospice says she’s doing the ride again this year after her first time a few years ago with a group. Registration is accepted right up ’til the morning of the ride, happening 7AM to 4PM starting from Surry Elementary School.
Jury Selection
(Maine) Jury selection began Thursday for a Gardiner man charged with killing his father and dismembering the body. 27-year old Leroy Smith the III is the first person in Maine required to take psychiatric medication under a law that aims to restore the mental capacity of defendants so they can take part in their own defense. A judge determined Smith is now competent to stand trial, which starts on Monday.
Girl Charged
(Jay) Police say a 9-year-old girl who called 9-1-1 twice to report someone with a gun was inside Spruce Mountain Middle School didn’t understand the seriousness of her actions. WMTW reports the girl from Livermore Falls is charged with making false threats. All schools in Jay were on lockdown Wednesday as state and local police searched the buildings but police say it turned out to be a prank.
