RSU 24 Re-vote
(Sullivan) – Voters in the 9-towns that make up Regional School Unit 24 will get to vote again on whether the district should buy the building in which the central office is located. By bonding a purchase and avoiding rental payments, the RSU would save about $600-thousand dollars over 15-years. Last November voters rejected the building’s $1-point-2 million dollar purchase.
Union Embezzlement
(Portland) – A former treasurer of a labor union has admitted he stole more than a quarter million dollars from the organization. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97.7 that 34-year old Ryan Jones of Bath entered a guilty plea to embezzling from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He served as the treasurer and secretary from 2009 until earlier this year. When he failed to win re-election, the newly elected union officials discovered the thefts through unauthorized withdrawals and made up bank statements. Jones faces up to 5-years in prison, a $10-thousand dollar fine, and restitution to the union.
Overdose Deaths
(Augusta) – The number of overdose deaths in Maine is keeping up with last year’s record pace. The Attorney General’s Office reports to Star 97.7 that through the first six-months of 2017, 185 drug overdose deaths occurred in Maine. That’s more than one death per day from overdoses. Last year 376-people died from drug overdoses for the entire year. The AG’s office says fentanyl has caused 61-percent of the deaths so far this year. The report says that 34-percent of those who died received Naloxone treatment, up 9-percent from 2016.
Porcupine – Soccer Goal
(Lamoine) – A prickly situation on the soccer field led to a wildlife rescue. School officials spotted a porcupine tangled up in one of the goal nets. They called the Maine Warden Service which used a knife to slice away the netting around the quill laden beast. The porcupine quickly ambled off into the woods around the field.
Flood Insurance
(Local) If you’ve considered getting a flood insurance policy there is a 30-day waiting period from the time you start the process until the policy is in place. JT Rosborough agency manager Ashley Rosborough say ALL flood insurance is regulated through the Federal Emergency Management Agency
Red Bridge Rd Fire
(Ellsworth) – A 42-year old Ellsworth woman injured in a fire Sunday on the Red Bridge Road faces arson charges. The Fire Marshal’s office tells Star 97.7 they arrested Tracie Conner who allegedly set a fire in a bedroom. Another woman living in the house heard the smoke detectors go off. Firefighters got them out of the burning home and to the hospital for smoke inhalation treatment. Police say they’ve frequently responded to incidents at the property, and the district attorney says Conner is held on high bail.
Suspect’s ID Needed
(Brewer) Brewer police say they can’t identify a man they have in custody because the suspect is being uncooperative. Police responded to a residential burglary on Wilson Street about 9 o’clock Tuesday morning. The suspect broke a window to enter the home then fled when he realized someone was there. Police detained him at a local business and arrested him for Burglary and Failure to Give Correct Name. The suspect has been linked to another burglary on Pierce Road but can’t be charged because he won’t give police his name, date of birth or address. Fleer Captured
(Penobscot) The dog working for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department tracked down a man who crashed his motorcycle in Penobscot and fled. Deputies responded to the single vehicle crash Sunday and followed foot prints toward a boat yard. K9 Finn found an open rear door to the building and alerted his handler Deputy Travis Frost that human odor was present. Finn continued through wooded terrain in rainy conditions and located Ian Orchard of Stonington walking behind a residence. Orchard is charged with Operating Under the Influence, Operating After Suspension and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
Hazmat Suit Arrest
(Camden) Police say they’ve arrested the man who allegedly donned a yellow hazmat suit and black face mask last week while trying to break in to a Brinks armored truck in Camden. Witnesses and video surveillance led police to 48-year-old Jon Baribeau of Brunswick. WABI-TV reports he’s charged with Attempted Felony Theft. When Baribeau discovered the truck door was locked he fled into the woods.
Bell Recovered
(Winter Harbor) A bell found at the bottom of the ocean floor in Winter Harbor two years ago is now on display for all to appreciate. In April 2015 Maine Warden Service Dive Team made the discovery while training near Mark Island Bell Buoy. The bell was so heavy divers didn’t recover it until a year later when they raised it to the surface with lift bags and towed it to shore. Letters stamped on the bell signify it was property of the United States Light House Services in the 1930’s. The bell can be viewed at the Schoodic Marine Center accompanied by pictures of its deep sea rescue.
