Boat Sinks
(Frenchman Bay) – When a lobster boat got its propeller snagged in lines, operator Teagan Candage quickly put out a mayday call as the boat started to swamp. The Mt. Desert Islander reports within 10-minutes several other boats in Frenchman were on scene and pulled the Maine Maritime Academy student and two other classmates out of the water, cold but unharmed. Candage’s father was also fishing nearby and pulled the swamped boat to a beach in Bar Harbor where they were able to refloat the lobster boat. Candage tells the paper the hull is intact, but he’ll need a new engine.
Passy Pete
(Belfast) – A lobster pulled from the Passagassawaukeag River in Belfast is giving Punxatawney Phil a run for his money, predicting 6-more weeks of summer yesterday. Known as Passy Pete, the lobster supposedly pointed to a scroll that his handlers read, and it was the one with the extended summer prediction. A small crowd gathered in anticipation of the 3-year old Labor Day tradition in Belfast which the local Chamber of Commerce dreamed up in 2015 to promote extended season tourism.
Back to School
(Ellsworth) It’s back to school time for most students. Ellsworth schools’ superintendent Dan Higgins says teachers have worked hard to prepare for this day. Anyone driving to Ellsworth high school is reminded to use the new Lejok Street entrance.
Weekend Crashes
(Undated) – As tourists flocked out of Maine to head home yesterday, the weekend left behind some carnage on the highway with alcohol and speed as common factors. Police say a crash Reed Plantation, better known as Wytopitlock, killed 47-year old Ritchie Suitter of Linneus during the weekend. A passenger suffered serious injuries. In Medway, police say 32-year old Michael Hill of California went off the road and hit trees, causing life threatening injuries. And in the Western Maine town of Perham, a 19-year old who was allegedly under the influence skidded off the road and hit a utility pole. Seth Cote and his 3-passengers wore seat belts, and Cote is charged with OUI.
Ellsworth Fire
(Ellsworth) – State fire investigators have finished their inspection of an Ellsworth home that caught fire Sunday morning. They may release the cause later today according to local fire officials. Firefighters from four departments rushed to the Red Bridge Road scene. They got two women out of the burning building and to a hospital for smoke inhalation treatment. A dog in the home perished in the fire that left the home severely damaged inside.
Archery Deer Hunt
(Maine) Maine’s deer hunt is getting started soon with archery season in some of the more populated parts of the state. The state’s “expanded archery” season begins September 9th and runs for 3 months allowing residents to hunt deer using a bow and arrow. Hunter orange clothing is not required when hunting with bow and arrow.
Utility Co’s Billing
(Augusta) Utility regulators are investigating whether a natural gas company’s failure to correctly bill several big commercial customers will impact other customers. Utility regulators were tipped off in June after a customer complaint. Regulators learned that the company discovered in late 2016 that a large customer had been under-billed due to errors in billing units.
