Katahdin Monument
(Washington, DC) – Today is decision day for the future of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announces his decision on whether the monument designation will stand, cease, or the size of the 87,500 acre park will shrink. A year ago today President Obama’s administration conferred the National Monument designation on the land that Roxanne Quimby donated to the government.
Powerball
(Des Moines) – Unless you bought a ticket from a Watertown Massachusetts convenience store, you are not the big winner this morning. The winning ticket was worth $758-million dollars and it’s the only ticket with the correct numbers on it. Powerball officials say four other tickets are worth $2-million dollars each.
Porn Plea
(Bangor) – A 38-year old Bangor man has admitted that he produced and possessed child pornography. Jeffrey Swimm faces up to 30-years in prison for child exploitation and another 20-years for possessing child porn. The US Attorney’s office tells Star 97.7 that Swimm produced still-image and video files using a camera hidden in his bathroom between 2012 and last April. A judge will sentence Swimm later.
Marville Obit
(Blue Hill) – One of Blue Hill’s biggest benefactors has died at the age of 88. Before moving to Blue Hill 33-years ago, Bob Marville was the director of the Rockefeller Center in New York City. After retiring, Marville owned the land that became the former Liberty School and later donated the land and buildings to the Bagaduce Music Lending Library. Marville was also behind the Parker Ridge retirement community and the Friendship Cottage to help people with memory loss.
Show Stopper
(Tremont) – Tremont’s code enforcement officer has shut down production at a boat house that planned to present a performance of Cabaret starting tomorrow. The Barn Arts Collective had used the boat storage facility from time to time for performances. Trouble is, they need Planning Board approval for the change of use. The Mt. Desert Islander reports neighbors complained about the noise and parking, and the Planning Board said the application the change of use was incomplete. The Planning Board won’t meet again until next month, and the Code Enforcement Officer issued a stop work order on the performances.
St. Albans Fatal
(St. Albans) – A St. Albans woman has died after she pulled her vehicle into an intersection and another car struck her on the driver’s side. WABI-TV reports 63-year old Madeline Nangle died en-route to the hospital. The woman driving the other car and Nangle’s 7-year old granddaughter also suffered injuries, none were life-threatening.
Shipyard Loan Approved
(Belfast) – A Belfast shipyard may grow significantly after the owners won loan backing from the Finance Authority of Maine. The Front End Shipyard says they hope to add 40-more jobs by purchasing the land currently leased from the City of Belfast. The purchase and plant expansion will cost $5-point-8 million dollars.
Island Explorer Bus
(Bar Harbor) The Island Explorer bus system honored its 7-millionth passenger with a ceremony and gifts. Friends of Acadia conservation director Stephanie Clement says a retired couple from Yarmouth got quite a surprise Wednesday morning. Clement says next Wednesday is the final day of summer service for most of the Island Explorer routes. The fall schedule begins August 31st and it’s posted online at: Explore Acadia dot Com.
Bangor Rd Crash
(Ellsworth) – Firefighters cut a 79-year old Indiana man from his vehicle in Ellsworth yesterday after he sideswiped a truck on the Bangor Road. Police tell Star 97-7 Edward Runyan suffered non-life-threatening injuries and an ambulance took him to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. The crash significantly slowed traffic on the busy road. Runyan told officers he had glanced away and didn’t see the truck he hit as it was trying to turn left on the road.
Bridge Jumper – False Alarm
(Bath) Maine Marine Patrol has called off a search for a man who witnesses say may have jumped from the Sagadahoc Bridge in Bath. Marine patrol used boats and a plane to search the Kennebec River on Wednesday. Bath police received a call around 10:30 Tuesday night from a motorist who saw a man sitting on the bridge railing then lost sight of him. A review of security footage from Bath Iron Works confirmed that a person was walking on the bridge at the time of the reported sighting. The Department of Marine Resources says the man was located safe yesterday afternoon.
Fiberight Progress
(Hampden) – Plans to build a trash to bio-gas plant in Hampden continue on track. The Municipal Review Committee, a group of towns that will send trash to the new plant when contracts with the PERC incinerator in Orrington expire next April, says buildings will start to go up this fall after completion of the access road off the Cold Brook Road. Fiberight, which is constructing and will operate the plant, has secured funding for construction.
Long-eared Bat
(Acadia Nat’l Park) A wildlife scientist at Acadia National Park stumbled upon an unexpected find – a healthy long-eared bat. They were once considered the second-most common bat in the park but in May 2016 the long-eared bat became listed as a threatened species. Park officials say the encounter near Jordan Pond on August 16th is first time the long-eared bat has been spotted this year and will likely be the last time.
Guilty Pleas
(Augusta) Two men accused in the beating death of an Augusta man pleaded guilty to felony murder and robbery charges. WMTW reports Damik Davis and Michael McQuade are charged with killing Joseph Marceau in 2015. Prosecutors say it was drug related. A third man Aubrey Armstrong is also charged with Marceau’s murder; he pleaded not guilty. A fourth suspect died in jail by suicide the day after pleading not guilty to the murder charge. Davis and McQuade will be sentenced later.
Ship Co Indicted
(Portland) A Germany-based shipping company has been indicted in Portland alleging that it failed to keep accurate pollution control records and falsified others aboard a cargo ship. The U.S. Attorney’s office says the nine-count indictment stems from the alleged falsification of records in 2016 and 2017 to cover up overboard discharges of oily mixtures and wastewater from the Liberian-flagged cargo vessel, M/V Marguerita.

- Chris Sale starts against Cleveland tonight.
- Red Sox have picked up veteran outfielder Rajai Davis for a minor leaguer. Davis will likely play center field while Jackie Bradley Jr. is on the disabled list.
- Dodgers pitcher Rich Hill no hit Pittsburgh for 9-innings, but lost the no-hitter and game in the 10th when he surrendered a home run.
