Baring Fire
(Baring) – Flames quickly consumed a mobile home in Washington County, leaving its occupant homeless. WVII-TV reports firefighters from Baileyville and several other communities responded to Moosehorn Road in Baring Monday evening. The fire chief says the fire started as a grease fire and quickly spread.
Camden Park Fatality
(Camden) – A hiker has died from an apparent medical condition on Megunticook Mountain in Camden. The Pen Bay Pilot reports rescue workers had to hike up the mountain yesterday afternoon and found a doctor and nurse administering CPR to the man in his 60’s. Rescue officials did not release the man’s name. Other hikers reported the incident at about 1-o’clock yesterday afternoon.
7-millionth Rider
(Bar Harbor) – An unsuspecting bus rider in Bar Harbor will receive gifts this morning as the 7-millionth person to ride on the Island Explorer Bus System since its start. A ceremony takes place at the Acadia National Park Hull’s Cove visitor center at 10-o’clock this morning. The honored rider will receive gifts from bus sponsor LL Bean and Friends of Acadia. The propane powers buses began operating on Mt. Desert Island many years ago as an effort to relieve traffic congestion in Acadia National Park. New buses are expected later this year.

(Bangor) If you’ve ever wanted to be Stephen King’s neighbor in Bangor you have 5 opportunities to do so, but they each come with a price tag. The Bangor Daily News reports 5 houses are for sale on the section of West Broadway where the famous horror writer lives. The listed price for the houses start at $369-thousand-dollars with the most expensive at $690-thousand-dollars.
High Speed Crash
(Knox) A fiery car crash in the town of Knox sent one man to the hospital by helicopter. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department reports to Star 97-7 that 25-year-old Christian Zingia drove too fast on Penney Road when he veered off the shoulder, overcorrected, and then hit a tree. The impact caused Zingia’s truck to catch on fire; Freedom fire department extinguished it. The victim escaped but was taken to the local hospital before being flown by helicopter to EMMC in Bangor. The extent of Zingia’s injuries are unknown and the crash remains under investigation.
Blueberry Crops
(Maine) Maine’s blueberry crop yield will likely drop considerably this year. University of Maine Cooperative Extension blueberry specialist David Yarborough says each of the previous 3 years produced one-hundred-million-pounds, but this year he expects only 50 to 75-million pounds. Yarborough says a good bloom and an easy winter just wasn’t enough to offset a very dry summer. On the positive side Yarborough says smaller blueberries are good quality this year.
Public Safety Building
(Ellsworth) – Ever since Ellsworth has run a police and fire department, both have operated out of city hall. The city council has voted to move ahead with plans to design a new public safety building, likely to locate where the current high school baseball field is located on State Street. Police chief Glenn Moshier told city councilors Monday night re-locating to a separate building will improve safety for current city staff. The move will also likely ease parking and staffing space issues at city hall, and significantly improve response at the new location. The city voted to pay a Bangor architect for a concept design.
Momo’s Cheesecakes
(Ellsworth) An Ellsworth woman has spent the last year selling cheesecakes out of her garage on the honor system. Brenda Ledezma tells Star 97-7 she began working at China Hill restaurant 19 years ago and made desserts, but only cheesecakes seemed to sell. Ledezma says she was encouraged to bake different flavors and she’s been on a roll ever since. There are signs for Momo’s Cheesecakes outside Ledezma’s Main Street home and on her garage where she began selling cheesecakes last September.
