Dam Removal
(Penobscot) – Workers have started to dismantle a leaking cement and steel dam from Wight Pond in Penobscot. The removal will make way for a natural fish passage to the pond, allowing for alewives to safely go through to lay eggs. The dam was an impediment to the fish making their way back and forth to fresh water ponds from salt water. The Ellsworth American reports crews from RF Jordan and Sons started tearing away the old dam this week.
SW Harbor/Cruise Ship Moratorium
(Southwest Harbor) – No big cruise ships for Southwest Harbor, at least not for now. Voters last night swiftly and unanimously approved a moratorium on ships carrying more than 50-passengers from dropping anchor in Southwest Harbor follow rumors that a ship carrying more than 200-passengers wanted to pay a visit. The moratorium will run for 6-months while town leaders craft up an ordinance to regulate cruise ships.
Dunk Tank
(Machias) The Machias Wild Blueberry Festival is this Friday thru Sunday. A dunk tank will be set up across the street from the courthouse on Saturday from 11 to 3 to benefit Arise Addiction Recovery. Arise director Paul Trovarello says they’ll also do free face painting for kids during that time. And if you can’t make it to the event Trovarello says you can still help people struggling with addiction in Washington County. Proceeds from the dunk tank benefit Arise Addiction Recovery in Machias.
Deer Permit Increase
(Augusta) The advisory council for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife commissioner will meet today to decide whether or not to increase the number of doe permits handed out this hunting season. Biologist Thom Schaeffer says the proposed increase was based on the information they collected in recent years while monitoring the deer population. The deer permit drawing is September 8th. Names of permit winners will posted on the state’s website: www.maine.gov/IFW
Attempted Murder Arrest
(Buxton) State police have charged a Buxton man in connection with a shooting August 6th that left another man with serious gunshot wounds. Detectives Monday night charged 19-year-old Brandon Lasante with attempted murder and elevated aggravated assault. He’s accused of shooting 28-year-old Lincoln Kimball of Hollis at Lasante’s home on Old Orchard Road about 2:30 in the morning. Kimball continues recovering at Maine Medical Center. Lasante’s due in court this week.
New EHS Entrance
(Ellsworth) Ellsworth High School has a new entrance which means getting to-and-from the school will be different this fall than previous years. Superintendent Dan Higgins says parents bringing their teens to school or students who drive themselves need to be aware of the changes. Maine Department of Transportation spokesman Ted Talbot tells Star 97-7 the new traffic light at the intersection of Lejok Street and Route 1A will be tested and activated prior to the first day of school. Freshman at EHS begin Tuesday, September 5th while the remaining high school students start September 6th.
Plane Crash
(Benton) A Clinton pilot walked away from the wreckage of his ultra-light plane Tuesday morning after it crashed in Benton. State police say rescuers took 75-year-old Bill Fuller to a hospital in Waterville with cuts and bruises. Fuller’s aircraft went down in the woods off the Neck Road around 11AM and hit a number of trees.
Relationship with Minor
(Belfast) A Belfast man stands accused of gross sexual assault, having a sexual relationship with an underage girl. WABI-TV reports a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children led police to 28-year-old Christopher Farrar. Police interviewed Farrar and the 13-year-old girl last week, both admitted to the relationship but the girl is not legally allowed to give consent. Investigators say the girl’s social media profile said she was 16 and that she also sent an explicit photo of herself to Farrar on Facebook.
Minor-Burglary
(Blue Hill) A 13-year-old boy from Blue Hill is charged with felony burglary after allegedly breaking in to Merrill and Hinckley last Friday. The Ellsworth American reports the Hancock County Regional Communications Center got a call about the burglary while it was in progress just before 1AM. The boy fled the scene prior to deputies arriving but he was identified the next day and charged.
