Missing Man Investigation
(Franklin) A Franklin man’s disappearance last February has gained more attention from law enforcement agencies. The last time anyone saw 48-year-old Russell Burnett he was walking a half-mile from his Eastbrook Road home the morning of February 21st. The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Evidence Response team spent time at Burnett’s home yesterday where he lived alone, looking for evidence that may lead to his whereabouts. The state troopers join the investigation led by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office and assisted by Maine Warden Service.
Cruise Ship Ban
(SW Harbor) – Voters in Southwest Harbor meet tonight to discuss a ban on cruise ships. The proposed moratorium will last for 6-months and give the town time to write an ordinance to regulate ships. Tremont voters are considering a similar move. Mt. Desert voters decided last year not to allow the large ships in Northeast Harbor. Bar Harbor will host more than 120-cruise ships this summer and fall, and leaders in the smaller towns on MDI say they don’t have the infrastructure to support the ships.
Lobster Thefts
(Vinalhaven) – Prosecutors have enough evidence to proceed to trial against a Vinalhaven man accused of stealing lobsters and a boat. The Knox County grand jury indicted 48-year old Jason Marriner on theft and unauthorized use charges. The Marine Patrol arrested Marriner in April. WABI-TV reports video surveillance recorded Marriner ripping off a lobster co-op and processing plant.
Ellsworth Moose
(Ellsworth) – Game Warden Eric Rudolph chased a young moose into the woods yesterday in Ellsworth after police got numerous calls about the animal. Witnesses said the moose looked sick. Rudolph says the calf is perfectly fine, just thin. He said the moose reacted normally when he tried to approach it, indicating the good health. Police had to direct traffic around the animal on the Bayside Road yesterday morning when it attracted attention.
Drug Arrests
(Oxford) Drug agents arrested two men just before a drug deal in the Oxford Casino parking lot. State police had pulled over a speeding truck on Route 26 Sunday. The truck’s operator, Samuel George of Paris, Maine, pulled into the casino. George is on probation and prohibited from using or possessing drugs or alcohol. A search turned up drug paraphernalia and a test later confirmed drug use. George allegedly admitted to police he was there to buy 10 grams of heroin from 35-year-old Norman Hightower. Police found Hightower in the casino and arrested him once he got to the parking lot. He’s charged with Aggravated Trafficking and Falsifying Physical Evidence for trying to destroy the drugs. George is held without bail.
Social Media Assault
(Passadumkeag) The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office looked to the public to help identify suspects in an assault that was recorded and posted on social media July 1st. They got what they needed! Last week 7 men and 1 juvenile girl were charged with assaulting a minor in Passadumkeag. WABI-TV reports the charges vary, ranging from Reckless Conduct and Assault to furnishing a place for minors to drink.
Eclipse
(Orono) Mainer get a partial view of next Monday’s solar eclipse. Emera Astronomy Center director Shawn Laatsch says the best viewing beings around 1:35 that afternoon. Laatsch stresses the importance of wearing eye protection. The Bangor Public Library will hand out solar eclipse glasses on Wednesday evening during Laatsch’s free presentation about the eclipse from 5:30 to 7:30.
Mail Theft
(Saco) A Saco woman is on probation for 2 years for stealing mail. The US Attorney’s Office reports to Star 97-7 that Norma Duhamel pled guilty to the charges in June and was sentenced yesterday. Court documents say the 71-year-old Duhamel stole items from mailboxes in Cumberland. She cashed more than $11-hundred-dollars in stolen checks and charged about $100 on a stolen credit card. As part of the sentence Duhamel must pay more than a thousand-dollars in restitution. If she violates the terms of her probation she’ll face jail time.
