Fatal Dog Attack
(Bangor) – A baby has died after the family dog attacked. Bangor Police report to Star 97.7 the criminal investigation division is looking into the incident that occurred on July 29th. The police and fire departments responded to a residence that Saturday morning and took the baby to the hospital where it died from the injuries. Police have not released any names in the incident.
Maine Marine Killed
(Washington) – The knock on the door at a home in Bethel was not one a military family wanted to answer. Marines informed Lt. Benjamin Cross’s family that his status had changed from missing to deceased last evening. Cross, who was 26-years old, was one of the three who did not survive a plane crash on board a vessel off Australia during the weekend. Two other families got the same notification. The crash during training saw 23-people on board the Osprey plane rescued.
Cruisers – CO
(Mt. Desert) – Police in Bar Harbor and Mt. Desert have installed carbon monoxide detectors in their Ford Explorer police cruisers after problems have cropped up with similar cruisers across the nation. The Mt. Desert Islander reports the officers installed the gas detectors last winter. Southwest Harbor plans to install gas detectors shortly. Explorer are involved in several accidents involving officers overcome by the odorless, colorless gas. One theory is that so much equipment is added to the police package that the gas leaks through the holes drilled for it.
Eddington Fire
(Eddington) – The fire marshal’s office will look for the cause of a blaze that damaged an Eddington home last evening. WABI-TV reports firefighters from several communities responded to Riverside Drive around quarter past six. No one was home, two dogs escaped without injury.
Meth Fire
(Island Falls) A grass fire along Interstate 95 in Island Falls late last week brought out the forest service, and drug enforcement. Regional forest ranger Jeff Currier says Ranger Steve Wipperman responded to the area to find a bottle containing methamphetamine making materials was to blame. Currier says Ranger Wipperman was able to dispose of the bottle himself, but Maine Forest Service works closely with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Department of Environmental Protection in more serious cases.
Tip A Cop
(Ellsworth) Members of several Hancock County law enforcement agencies will wait tables at Pat’s Pizza in Ellsworth for the annual Tip a Cop fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics. Event coordinator Officer Bart Tokas says the management at Pat’s goes above and beyond to ensure the fundraiser is successful while still taking care of their employees. During Tip a Cop from 4 to 8 tonight one-dollar from every small pizza and two-dollars from each large pizza for dine in and carry out orders will also be donated to the Special Olympics.
Drug Arrests
(E Dixfield) Maine drug agents seized drugs from a Dixfield home and locked up 3 suspects. 41-year old Jody Welch owns the home on Rollins Ridge. He was home with 8 guests when police arrived after 4AM. The search turned up 83 grams of crack cocaine, digital scales and other drug paraphernalia. Welch was arrested along with 26-year-old Rene Speranza and 34-year-old Adam Turner both of Peru for drug possession. Additional arrests are expected.
Three Burglaries
(Camden) An anonymous tip from the public led Camden police to arrest two Manhattan residents who allegedly burglarized 3 businesses early last week. Police posted a surveillance video on Facebook showing the pair walking downtown during the time of the burglaries. Village Soup Dot Com reports police arrested 21-year-old Talicia Martins, charging her with burglary and felony theft. 20-year-old Jacob Flanagan turned himself in. He faces 3 counts of burglary and felony theft. Flanagan is a former Camden resident.
Falcon Chicks
(Acadia Nat’l Park) The National Park Service has re-opened trails and cliffs closed at Acadia National Park since March to protect nesting peregrine falcons. Park spokesman John Kelly says 5 chicks fledged this year compared to 11 last year is still a good number. Kelly says all the areas around the Precipice Cliffs and trail, Valley Cove, and Jordan Cliffs are again open to the public.
Cruise Ship Ban
(Tremont) A Bass Harbor citizen is proposing a preemptive strike to ban cruise ships from stopping in the local harbor before any cruise ship companies make the request. The Mt Desert Islander reports resident Mike Hays approached the Harbor Committee last month with the idea after the recent controversy over cruise ships wanting to stop in Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor. Hays said allowing cruise ships into Tremont would have little to no economic benefit. The moratorium would give the town time to develop policies regarding the use of the harbor by vessels carrying more than 50 passengers.
Paint Dumped
(Ellsworth) Comments expressing disgust on social media after the Ellsworth Police Department posted photos last week of many paint buckets that appeared to have been illegally dumped. Detective Dotty Small tells Star 97-7 it turns out the waste was actually on private property near City Forest. A label on a paint can led police to the company who purchased the paint in 2007 from Sherwin Williams – they had a record of the sale. The new owner of the painting company helped police properly dispose of the paint and pointed out some buckets contained flooring adhesive. Small says no charges will be filed and it looked as though someone had been dumping paint there for years.
