Surry Gravel Pit
(Surry) – Strong feelings in Surry over a plan to double the size of an existing gravel mining operation. The Ellsworth American reports the Planning Board in Surry has tabled the matter for 10-days while the Code Enforcement Officer determines whether the application is complete. M.E. Astbury and Sons want to increase the size of their current pit to 7-point-9 acres. Neighbors say they’re concerned that the larger mining operation will negatively affect groundwater and create more noise.
Belfast Bag Ban
(Belfast) – City councilors in Belfast plan to discuss a ban on single-use plastic bags tonight. They’ll also add polystyrene containers into the debate. The city council agenda tonight contains first readings of two ordinances – one would completely ban the use of plastic, single use shopping bags typically used by grocery stores. The other bans use of Styrofoam for take out food and beverage which are popular in coffee shops and restaurants. Village Soup dot-com reports the bag ordinance got tabled in March when many people said it didn’t go far enough to protect the environment.
Park St Playground
(Bar Harbor) Volunteers have raised $180-thousand-dollars to renovate the Park Street playground in Bar Harbor. Playground committee chair and Rotarian, Jenna Horton Boucher [boo-SHAY] says it took a village to reach the fundraising goal. Volunteers will assemble and install the playground equipment on September 9th. Those interested should email: Park Street Playground at G Mail dot Com.
Assault Neighbors
(Swanville) Deputies in Waldo County say a Swanville man went to a neighbor’s house to ask for a ride, then stabbed the neighbor for not giving him a lift. It happened on the Oak Hill Road last Wednesday night. The victim suffered a cut on his thigh. Police questioned 37-year-old Jeffrey Stump then arrested him for Aggravated Assault and Aggravated Reckless Conduct. Doctors treated the victim at a Belfast hospital, Stump got a ride….. to the Waldo County Correctional Center.
Meth Sentence
(Swanville) A Swanville man will spend more than a year in prison for making meth. WABI-TV reports drug agents caught 53-year old David Knowlton at his Harriman Road home making the drug last month. Knowlton pleaded guilty last week and received his sentence. Agents also arrested 27-year-old Jacob Webber who was staying with Knowlton at the time. Webber will be sentenced later.
OUI Crash-Arrest
(Searsmont) A Searsmont man who caused a rollover accident Saturday is charged with Operating Under the Influence. Waldo County deputies were called to the New England Road for a passenger trapped inside the vehicle. The seriously injured victim was life-flighted to EMMC in Bangor. The driver, 46-year-old Albert Rhodes was arrested at the crash site for OUI and Driving to Endanger. The investigation continues and Rhodes could face more charges.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – The family of a Maine man killed on Christmas 2015 is appealing the state’s denial to pay for his funeral costs because authorities said he was involved in criminal activity. The Kennebec Journal reports Augusta police contend 35-year-old Eric Williams had committed a burglary hours before his shooting, making his family ineligible for compensation from the state Victims’ Compensation Program. His family says Williams should be innocent until proved guilty.
UNDATED (AP) – Interstate fishing regulators are meeting to discuss a Trump administration decision they say has the ability to jeopardize conservation of marine resources on the East Coast. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is meeting on Tuesday in Alexandria, Virginia. The commission has disagreed recently with federal Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross over a decision he made about summer flounder fishing.
BETHEL, Maine (AP) – Maine officials say they have helped rescue a hiker who appeared to go into cardiac arrest on a mountain trail. The Sun Journal reports two men were hiking on the Albany Mountain Trail in Bethel Sunday night when first responders received a call of a person down. Officials say the man reported to be in his 60s was given a shock with a defibrillator before being flown to a hospital.
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – The Maine attorney general’s office says a police officer was legally justified in using his gun to try to disable a stolen construction vehicle. Lewiston Police Sgt. Derrick St. Laurent ended a low-speed chase by shooting at the tires of the front-end loader after two juveniles intentionally rammed a police cruiser.
